Default 2007 dodge dakota seat belt chime won't stop

it's been about 2 or 3 weeks now. the seatbelt light stays on and the chime won't stop! i tried the official 'bypass' (clip/unclip 3x), nothing. checked the harness under the seat & connections in the belt clip itself. used a 12V test light, got nothing under the seat or in the clip. w/o ripping the entire seat out or the interior up, i've checked the wiring as far as i can see.

it's like water torture! SOMETIMES, it stops beeping after a few minutes, sometimes it keeps going. the light stays on all the time, though.

any thoughts?

Sounds like the sensor isn't getting the signal, obviously I know ... and thats why the bypass wouldn't work because its not registering as being clipped just unclipped. If you have a multimeter tester you should be able to check the sensor just to verify weather its closing or opening when the seat belt is used. There shouldn't be live constant power like you are thinking. I can't remember correctly and someone else may chime in, but you may be able to basically electrically bypass the sensor all together... if you choose not to replace it.

When mine did that, I found the wiring to the seatbelt sensor had been cut in two by the seat track (another idiot design, run wires over the seat track). I just stripped the wires and wire nutted them together.

Kent is probably right on this one but I would stick with the old trick of disconnecting the battery. It never hurts and fixes a lot of electrical bugs I run into..

You can disable the seat belt chime, I did it in my Dak and 2 Durangos at work. This is done more easily while standing outside the vehicle.

The Enhanced Warning System (BeltAlert) can be enabled
or disabled by your authorized dealer or by
following these steps:
NOTE: The following steps must occur within the first
60 seconds of the ignition switch being turned to the ON
or START position. DaimlerChrysler does not recommend
deactivating the Enhanced Warning System
(BeltAlert).

1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and
buckle the driver’s seat belt.
2. Start the engine and wait for the Seat Belt Warning
Light to turn off.
3. Within 60 seconds of starting the vehicle, unbuckle
and then re-buckle the driver’s seat belt at least three
times within 10 seconds, ending with the seat belt
buckled.

4. Turn off the engine. A single chime will sound to
signify that you have successfully completed the programming.

The Enhanced Warning System (BeltAlert) can be reactivated
by repeating this procedure.
NOTE: Although the Enhanced Warning System
(BeltAlert) has been deactivated, the Seat Belt Warning
Light will continue to illuminate while the driver’s seat
belt remains unbuckled.

Disclaimer: I strongly advise the use of seat belts while vehicle is in motion.
