Fuel Mileage with 4.10 gears
There were comments/questions on earlier posts regarding mileage after changing to 4.10 gears. I changed mine quite a while ago but have not checked highway mileage until last weekend since I am usually towing a trailer when on the highway.
Here is what I experienced: City mileage improved from 15.5 to 16.7 in constant stop and go, 17+ in city with fewer stops and no load. Highway at constant 70 mph went from 21 to 19.7. At 75 mph, it dropped a bit. My Dak is an '05, 4.7, auto, QC. The performance improvement is really worth the small drop in highway mileage and the increase in city mileage is a bonus. More than half of my driving is in the city. |
how the hell were you getting 21mpg highway before? i can never get above 16-17 even when babying the heck out of it
|
I am pulling the same numbers all week long right now on the 3.55s... its all in the foot :D Hook me to a trailer and I lose probably 3 mpgs all around.

so you have a v8 and what size tires?
|
im lucky to get 13.5 in the city with the 4.7 and keep in mind thats babying the hell out of it, i havve no mods and 265/70/r17 tires with the 3.55 gears
|
huh? I am only averaging about 14-17mpg half city/half highway in a v6 w 3.55s. (heavely modded) Are you sure they put in 4.10s? ;)

Ever since I joined this forum there have been big differences in fues lileage. Your left foot makes a big difference but I think there are differences in the trucks to. If you are getting poor mileage and driving to get the best you can, there must be a difference in the trucks.
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that has always gotten decent mileage. Even pulling a trailer from Florida to Texas, I got 13.5-14 mpg with 4.10 gears. |

My old 96 dakota with the 3.9 used to get about 22 per gallon on the highway. But to get 21 with a v8, now that's impressive

left foot?

Looking at these numbers, I'd be wondering if it is a speed/distance sensor thing. I don't know if it has been adjusted or if it happens automatically, but different gear ratios mean that the computer "thinks" you are going a different speed/distance than you actually are. Haven't done the math yet (and probably won't), but this may be why you think you are getting better mileage than you are. |
"left foot" was an oops, give me a break, I'm old.
In reference to the speed sensor, the reluctor ring (gear) for the speedo and ABS, in a 9.25 rear end, is in the diff, behind the ring gear. It spins at axle speed so it is not influenced by the gear ratio. Nothing has to be done to keep the speedo, odometer and trip computer accurate. There must be something else that effects mileage. I really think that city mileage improves because less gas pedal is needed to accelerate. Highway mileage drops at cruise because the engine is spinning faster and the extra power is wasted. |

"Old" like When President Kennedy was assasinated, I had already joined the Army.
Not "old" like - still crawl around on and under my truck and the '53 Chevy that I just sold, not 'old' like excited about the Cobra that I am getting to replace the '53 Chevy, like still get my wife annoyed because of my vehicular toys. "Old" like 5 children, 11 Grandchildren, one Great Grandson. Funny thing about "old" - it looks way different from the inside than from the outside. |

But you've got things that keep you active and engaged! You'll never really get old as long as you have that. One day, you will just stop, hope your great grandson has you around long enough to learn about the things you like to do! |
it could be the fuel he is using, maybe he isnt running anything with ethanol blended in...IIRC up to 10% ethanol is common place for "regular" and people who locate stations that dont use the ethanol blend get higher mileage
