Transmission problems
I was driving my 2005 Dakota hit a very small bump in the road and the transmission went into neutral my nephew pulled the pan for me,the fluid wasn’t burnt and there was no debris in the pan. Could it be something simple like a sensor. The linkage was fine. I don’t want to spend 4,000 on a rebuilt. Thanks in advance for any help |
How is the fluid level? These transmissions don't like being under or over filled.
Model? Engine? Know the trans? There are 3 (2 autos and a manual). It throw any codes? More info req'd. |
Fluid was were it was supposed to be on the stick. It’s a 4,7 automatic transmission. It has 200,000 miles on it but what I thought was odd was there was really no debris in the pan. It gave no indication that there was a problem. Just stopped |
Maybe you didn't have the gear shift fully engaged and it slipped? Is it fine now?
|
No, I checked the linkage and it’s working fine however every gear I put it in its still like it’s in neutral. Check engine light is not on so it’s not even throwing a code???? |

The filter serves as the fluid pick up as well.... Just a suggestion. |
Thanks, the pan was dropped after the problem occurred. We thought maybe the filter had slipped down. Didn’t get that lucky |

It seems that cracked filters are a known problem on these transmissions. Go to the link attached and see the first problem. http://etereman.com/blog/fiat-transm...re-easy-to-fix Other then that, I would start with a scanner and see if any codes are showing. It could be as simple as a solenoid but I am way out of my league here. Let us know what you find out. And welcome to the forum!!! |
Hang on a minute... so, you put it in Drive, and the wheels don't spin? No spinning in reverse either?
4x4 or 2wd? Does the driveshaft spin when it's in D or R? Have you tried 1 or 2 as well? My current line of thought: These transmissions are electric nightmares, but they usually send codes for the most mundane things - what if it isn't the trans? Say, the Transfer Case, Driveshaft, U-Joints, Rear Diff, Rear Axle... all things that don't send codes.... |
When I put it in drive or reverse the only thing that happens is the engine revs. It’s a 4wd. I didn’t check to see if the drive shaft was spinning. The only thing that works is park. It’s a great truck, had it since February 06 and this is the first time it left me on the side of the road.
