Do a little searching on lash adjusters. Get a mechanics stethoscope and listen to where its coming from.

I am subscribing to this thread. I am having the same tapping from my 4.7 in my 08 Dakota crew cab with 120k miles. What may be different about my symptoms is
1. gets worse the colder the weather
2. will actually go away for about 5 seconds at a time

Some fairly knowledgable people think it is likely to be a lifter going bad. At their direction i have added valve cleaner to my oil in hopes of clearing any dirt out. It has only been 1500 miles so far so I will wait for a few more thousand miles before pulling off valve covers.

Typically lash adjusters or exhaust manifold leaks. Mine used to tap - was a broken exhaust manifold stud. New studs and new gaskets, problem solved. Quite common on these trucks.

Mine has the "tap". I pressurized the exhaust and it does have manifold leaks. Tap does go away after a few min. Kind of gotten used to it. I will change the gaskets when I have time. OP might want to pressurize the exhaust with a shop vac and get the spray bottle out with soap/water and look for bubbles around the manifolds.
