OIL Preference

Ok, I have a 2004 Ram QC 4X4 that I bought used a month ago with 30K miles. I am getting ready to do an oil change and wondered what others have as a preference of oil and why. I have worked in the Petroleum industry for over 8 years so I know a fair bit about fuel, but not so much about motor oils...

Thanks for your input!

RE: OIL Preference

I get free oil changes every 3K miles for my 04 QC 4X4 Hemi. Even with the free oil changes, I still been using synthetic oil (Amsoil)...no I'm not a dealer and won't try to sell you anything. I've had great success with synthetic oils. I'm currently going to install the dual bypass oil system for my vehicle. It will add an additional 2 quarts to the capacity and will eliminate the need to every change the oil again. I will however need to replace the filters twice a year and top off the oil that was lost. I know it sounds crazy, but after 280,000 miles on my 89 Suburban with no problems I guess you can say I'm a loyal synthetic user....

I just put Mobli 1 5w30 syntehtic in mine, I have alway's used Mobil 1 in all my other vehicles and my last vehicle was a Dodge Dakota V6 with 178,000 miles (285,000kms) and didn't burn or use a drop! Mobil 1 is the way to go in my mind.

Synthetic seems to be the ticket, but your not getting the full benefit of it if your not extending your change intervals.

What is a reasonable interval between synthetic oil changes?

RE: OIL Preference

Intervals are often recommended by the manufacturer. I'm currently going 5K with mine, and that's even less than they recommend. Depends alot on how your driving conditions are too.

I was reading on the Amsoil site that you can go 25000 miles or 1 year between oil changes... I have always belived that the old 3000 mile oil change is overkill, but 25000 miles seems a bit extreme.
Anyone here got that long on Synth???

Here is the Amsoil website...http://www.amsoil.com/products/asl.html
