4X4 Differential fluid change
Im planning on doing an oil change and changing the diff fluid tomorrow. I have a 2007 1500 hemi 4x4 and was wondering what fluid i needed for the front and rear diff's, and also the quantity of each, thanks in advance.

RE: 4X4 Differential fluid change
its in your manual. and there is a diy at the top.
It depends on if you have a limited slip or not. |
RE: 4X4 Differential fluid change
I dont have a manual, and the DIY does not mention the quantity for the rear dif, just thats its 75w-140, and it doesnt mention anything about the front dif.

RE: 4X4 Differential fluid change
75-90 for the front diff
|
RE: 4X4 Differential fluid change
Ok thanks, so 75-140 for the rear, and 75-90 for the front, what about quantities? Im also going to be changing the oil, im right at 15,000 miles, what else should i do?

RE: 4X4 Differential fluid change
yeah 75-90 for the front. if you have the limited slip use the 75 140 with friction additive. Just fill it up still it starts to come out the hole where the plug is, then put the plug in.

RE: 4X4 Differential fluid change
they usually come in taller bottles, not sure how much is in each. but i think you need 2 for each. ( i think they only come in one size) You might get away with 3 total though.

RE: 4X4 Differential fluid change
DO NOT fill it to the hole. That is too much and will cause it to bubble and turn to mush. That was the old rule and does not apply to these diffs.
Fill it until its around 1/2 - 3/4" from the hole. Front is around 3.5pts 75 by 90, rear is around 4.9pts 75 by 140, both synthetic. Lke said, use a little bottle of Mopar friction additive to the rear if you have anti slip. |

RE: 4X4 Differential fluid change
as per dodge 5/8's of an inch below fill hole. (fill hole..hrm.. sounds like something youd ask for in japan when youre out on liberty)
dont forget about the rtv silicone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
RE: 4X4 Differential fluid change
Oh and Royal Purple or AMSOIL (AMSOIL claims 100k before next drain & fill) would be the way to go...

One last thing, you dont need to replace the front as often as the rear, unless youre in 4 hi half the time it doesnt get anywhere near the amount of use as your rear axle does. I change both because out here in Texas we have roads that flood quite often and im not one to turn around, ill make my serpentine belt squeel like a pig, part the red sea with the front bumper submerged so you want to make sure youre not riding around with some water in there.
Good luck, im gonna be changing mine this month. |

Yea you'll be fine. Ionly have 6k on my truck i havent changed it yet...but as long as you see what i'm saying??? Just make sure you dont forget to do it in the near future. It should be done the same time as the rear, unless ur doing wheelies all day.

RE: 4X4 Differential fluid change
Well im going to jump school this week, and then up to SERE school, so i wont be doing it for like a month and a half, but the truck will only get about 1500 miles on it in that time.

RE: 4X4 Differential fluid change
15000 miles, is it me or is this way early. I have never had to do this so early for any truck.
Has anyone seen this TSB and if so does it apply to axel fluid ? http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2007/26-003-07.htm I have an 07 and am right at 15K, Iwas planning on doing it, but noticed this TSB, can anyone comment on this as it says axel lube ! |
I bought my 1500 used. How can I be sure about the anti-slip additive requirement? Do I need it or not?

look in yer glove box, theres a sticker, if it says "anti spin" somewhere on it you have limited slip.... unfortunately.... and need slip additive |
