Confused about Tires
I keep checking different tire sources trying to determine what size tire I should use for replacement tires on my 04 Dodge Ram. The tires that are on it now are 275-60-20, but all the references I have found say that I should be putting 275-55-20 on my 04 Dodge Ram 1500 2x4. Will it really make a difference in performance. I have a few metal strands sticking out of my left front tire so I need to make a tire choice NLT Monday afternoon, so any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

Here is how it works.
the first number 275 is the width of the tire in millimeters.
the second number 60 is the % of the width that is the height of the tire from the rim to the end of the tread.
the 3rd number is the rim size.
So:
275mm = 10.83" The width of the tire
60% or 10.83 = 6.5" you have to multiply that by 2, once for the top, once for the bottom
= 13"
Then add the rim size of 20.
13 + 20 = 33"
Now the new tires are 275/55R20
275mm = 10.83" width
55% of 10.83" = 5.95" * 2 = 11.9"
20" rim
11.9 + 20 = 31.9"
The R simply means Radial. If there are letters in front; P means Passenger vehicle and LT means Light Truck.
Hope this helps.

http://www.redrock4x4.com/tech/tire_...&method=metric This is a handy convertion calculator that changes from metric to standard and visa versa. It might help some. If the above don't show as a link just copy and paste it. I ain't figures out how to put links in yet.lol
