Strange Sound After Installing Cold Air Intake

I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.7L Hemi. I put a K&N Cold Air intake on and now have a strange backfiring sound coming from what sounds like the exhaust system. The noise will happen and I feel a slight loss in power and then I slam on the gas and it will be back to normal untill it happens again. Do you know what this could be?

...mds...

That's what I thought of at first but I didn't think that I should be able to hear the change or notice when it goes on and off. Could the cold air intake be affecting the way the mds comes on and off?

you might just be hearing the change in pitch more because of the cold air intake. If your intake is kinda noisy air sucking sound like mine, when the mds kicks in it will pull a different amount of air than when it was running on 8 cylinders, and that could be the sound your hearing

that's really weird man. i can't see it being because of the intake. i mean, the vehicle has "virtually" no idea anything has change. it's probably cause the change in pitch/whisling noise you may be noticing.

if you're really curious, and are pretty handy, there are walk-throughs on how to install an mds light that comes on when mds kicks in...not only is that cool, you may be able to find a correlation in the noise you hear and when that mds light comes on.

prolly mds, do your have an aftermarket muffler?

Muffler

No. I still have the stock exhaust system. The sound seems to be coming from around the headers and sounds like a caughing noise. Could it be backfiring?

Redbud66 12-03-2008 05:33 PM

I don't see how a cai could cause backfiring. If it comes from the headers it might be an exhaust leak. I know that bad plug wires caused mini backfires on my buddy's chevy, but your truck is not old enough to have that problem.

You might try putting your stock intake on and seeing if that fixes it, but I still agree that it is prolly the change from 8 to 4

if you have the stock exhaust system, you dont have headers, theyr called exhaust manifolds, and they are very good at not leaking, but my dads hemi developed an exhaust leak between the manifolds and the cats

I'm sure it's the MDS. I have an Edge Evolution Programer and on one of the pyrometers it tell's me when im in 8 cyl or 4 cyl mode and it sounds like what your hearing is the same thing that I hear in my truck, and you can also feel it kick in and out. Just a sugestion though.
