2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck 4x4 Quad Cab

Looking at 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck 4x4 Quad Cab Hemi with 75,000 miles.

Anyone had trouble with the hemi or anything I might need to know or look for in this model?

Appreciate the help.

My uncles 2004 Ram Daytona HEMI doesnt have any problems @ 37,900 miles..Well probally 38k now but you get what i mean..

I have a 2005 Laramie (Hemi) with 77K miles. I purchased it with 72K.

Things I did and things I was told not to do:

Do - A complete tune up and change all fluids (See below exception). Note, changing the plugs on the driver's side are a bear. It will go a LOT smoother if you remove the inner wheel well.

Do NOT - Change the transmission fluid. Only change the filter. I have family members that work at a Chrysler Transmission plant and they expressed that you never should flush the transmission fluid even though the maintenance schedule calls for it. That is one of the quickest ways to cause your Tranmission to have problems.

Do - Replace the tie rod ends with new ones that have grease fittings. Get a four wheel alignment afterwards.

Things that are going bad now:

- My rack & pinnon is leaking fluid, (very little), however in cold temps the power steering is very sluggish when first starting the vehicle.

- The check engine light comes on every once in a while. The simple solution is to disconnect one battery cable and leave it off for 5 minutes or so. I had the error code diagnosed and it said it was due to a low coolant temp. Pretty odd as it was in the middle of summer.

The driver's side rear wheel wells are prone to rusting out. I had to cut out, (quite a bit), of rust to get to clean metal.

I am not a truck person, but I do like this vehicle quite a bit other than the gas mileage.

Good luck!

Chris

102k miles on mine and still no issues. Only things under the hood I've ever changed, besides spark plugs and battery, are an EGR valve and a wiper washer fluid pump.

All fluids have been changed at least once, including transmission. However, for transmission, I didn't get it flushed, just drained and refilled with a new filter.

Inside the cab, one of my power seat adjustments failed after about 6 years and I recently replaced the entire seat track. Also, same seat, the adjustable lumbar support broke - not bothering to fix.

In my opinion, all things I can live with over 8.5 years and 100k miles.

Well, he's had five years to consider it. I think he's probably either bought or passed on the truck by now, though. It's only been since 2008... :D

I've got 160,000 miles on mine and the Hemi hasn't blinked. Only things I've done (motor wise) is a complete dual exhaust (including headers and two cherry bombs :icon_oldskewl:) since the rear manifold bolts broke and I only did that because I couldn't stand the exhaust leak/tick. I highly recommend the first thing you do though is get a superchip programmer. After the exhaust and programmer total $1000 (did the exhaust all myself) I've increased my mileage from 10-13mpg to 16-19mpg. These improvements have paid for themselves 10 x's over. Not to mention you can, on occassion, set it up for performance. :icon_goofygrin:

Only other advice I can give is a close friend of mine once told me "... it's not the mileage that scares me, it's the previous owners that give me nightmares." Basically meaning has the motor been taken care of? That's the question.:icon_denk:

I bought mine new in '04 and have a 135k on her. Nothing major other than having to have the front end rebuilt. Now I have zerks in all the right places. :)
And having to reroute the wiring for the towing package since the IPM is garbage. I couldn't even get a new one since they were 6 months on backorder. Yet no recall from Dodge. :(

LMAO ! I didn't see the date either. I just saw it was on the first page of new posts. Well can't hurt to get some opinions after 4 years.
