pillar painting

so i did all my back pillars in krylon fusion they worked out great, then i tried to put my front ones in and because it was a tight squeeze i had to kind of force them back in and the paint scraped up, any ideas on how to go about getting them in without doing it that way i mean it went through all my layers of clear and paint, so i was wondering about sanding them back down and using that vinyl dye any advice would help

sharkhunter10 04-19-2009 10:10 PM

not sure how to stop the paint from chipping but would like to see some pics of the pillars and the chip then maybe help.

and thats not even the worst of it thats as far as i tried getting it in so im sure it would be worse if i fully put them in

sharkhunter10 04-19-2009 10:32 PM

You could try to put some light tape over the places were it chips the pull it of aslong it dosnt pull the paint off or you might have to pull the headliner down!

irelandshemi 04-19-2009 10:42 PM

yeah i was gunna try that and im not too worried about the tape lifting the paint because i give it over a day to dry and all that but im worried about not being able to get the tape off then re having to do it and i had the headliner dropped yesterday but didnt help getting the bottom in

sharkhunter10 04-19-2009 10:52 PM

i didnt think about the bottom you might have to like place a bag over the end then try to pull it out at the end or cut it to were its not visible
(redneck way)

irelandshemi 04-19-2009 10:54 PM

ha yeah that might work, its killing me because everything is done but cant be put back in

BEAR 04-19-2009 11:45 PM

Hey man, i did the same thing to my pillars. When I put mine back in they only scraped a little on the bottoms so I took some of the same paint I used to paint them with on a small brush and touched up the spots. You can't tell it now.

irelandshemi 04-20-2009 01:27 AM

thanks, were yours really hard to get in as far as took some force, did you paint them with a gun or spray paint?

BEAR 04-20-2009 08:01 AM

Had to sort of slide the bottom in to where it snapped in place. Thats where the bottom gets scratched. Judging from your pics yours scratched up pretty good on the bottoms. Mine only got scratched right above the dash. I spray painted mine with Vinyl and Upholstery paint and I primed it first with Adhesion Promoter. That stuff is good for all kinds of surfaces but especially for vinyl and plastics.

irelandshemi 04-20-2009 08:34 AM

the vinyl and upholstery paint or dye? cause i have the dye and was getting ready to try that

mfs212 04-20-2009 09:46 AM

irelandshemi 04-20-2009 10:17 AM

I used the paint with the adhesion promoter. I know it works real well cuz I also did the dash in an old 84 Ramcharger that I have about 5 years ago and it still looks new. i can't speak on the dye cuz I ain't never used it.

mfs212 04-20-2009 11:43 AM

Where'd u get that adhesion promoter?

try smearing vasoline on the stickers.

irelandshemi 04-20-2009 01:48 PM

hmm didnt think about vasoline on them, i wonder if when i go to rub it off tho if it will do something with the dye
