you're right, i don't like the chevy ads either. as for getting a ford, good choice IMO. I've worked with dodges and fords and i can say from experience that fords outpull and as a worktruck, outlast dodge by a long shot. are you getting an older ford or a newer one? i know the old 7.3 engines are solid as stone, and require hardly any maintenance. they are also torquey as can be. i don't know how newer ford gas engines do so i can't say. as for new ford diesels i've heard bad things about the new 7.3. i've personally blown 3 dodge 3500 trannys at work in the last 2 years, so as a worktruck i say dodge's weak link is the transmission, even if the CTD can handle it.
I used to be a loyal Ford guy, not now, and having to drive a brand that I liked, and now hate is a hard transition. Stearling trucks ( rebadged dodge ) is stepping up and replacing the heavy duty trucks from Ford.
Ford's fleet sales on the F-350+ is going to go down hill, thats abought all the V/10 can do, is go down hill.
Public ultility companies buy a the F350 + trucks not because thier great, just that thier cheap to buy for large fleats.
Dodge automatics do have thier issues, But in the next year or two, your going to see stearing trucks pull the carpet out from Ford..

someone said farther back in this post that you can't compair 1500 to 2500 or 3500! that is OH so true! but you have to look at many things even when compairing like modles. take the new dodge for example. the suspention is different than anything else right now. its a smart move! they gave up towing cap due to, well honestly, how many of us that have 1500's tow much more than the occational car or boat? you bought the 1500 for the "truck" cause thats what you wanted, the room a truck gives you, and yes it can be used for way more than a car could ever think of! Now as far as the ride between a 1500 and 2500+ you again can't compair. they ARE NOT EVEN THE SAME TRUCK! almost everything is different between them.
Another topic that was hit on was the mileage on the trucks. My family has a business and we put a TON of miles on trucks and work vans. i'll list the major dodge and other brands and you'll see there is a differance
-90 dodge 250 w/ 318, man. never had the valve covers off! 450,000+ miles at time of sale (used a lot for pulling race car and company eq.)
-91 dodge 250 w/ 360, auto. cat stopped up and ecm went bad sold with 400,00 + miles (any many camper and boat pulls (same time) as well as company euq pull
-96 dodge 3500 5.9 (12v) auto tq went out at 300,000. truck had many mods. sold with 800,000 showing and is still used to pull farm eq
-97 dodge 1500 (heavy half 8lug) van 318 auto. still in use with over 500,000. no engine work besides a replaced freeze plug. rear end burnt out after was in a flood with rear in water (was parked on a bank)
-01 dodge 3500 5.0 auto still in use with many mods with 350,000+ (very hard) miles. notable work is broken driveshaft and ****ing pusher pump! lol
-04 dodge 2500 5.9 auto 100,000 miles zero problems
-05 dodge 1500 5.7 auto 50,000 miles (mine) and only problem has been ****ing cheap factory goodyear tire on my 4x4
now others
-05 ford 250 van 4.7 (maybe 4.6 not sure) auto blew hg at 90,000
-04 ford 250 van 4.7 (maybe 4.6 not sure) auto tranny broke input shaft at 120,000
-99 ford 250 and 150 van both ate rear axles for breakfast
-98 ford 250 runs like a champ
we run rottella t in all our dodge work trucks and vans (not my 5.7) and change the oil every 10,000 miles any knock on wood never have a problem. now we might buy a lemon tomorrow but we have had great luck thusfar
our fords we run the same oil but change them every 5,000 to keep em in one piece.
if you are going to but something for towing or "work horse" buy something that will last. the 5.9 is the way to go! and for someone to be worried about up keep cost of the diesel your not thinkint that all the way through! in line diesel engines haave 30% less parts that means they are by nature more reliable! and they hold more oil so yeah it may cost more for the oil change itself but how many times will you change the oil in your gas engine before your diesel? unlike gas and oil diesel and oil bond so its easier on oil aswell. so other than that what up keep is there? air filter? same cost, oil filter cheaper (less changes), cheaper! then the rest of the drivetrain is the same gas or diesel. so i do not understand the reasoning behind your thoughts!

Avoid the 5.4L F250! I've driven my company's 350 5.4L 4x4 and its a turd. Acceptable around town unloaded, but it feels like the engine is giving all it's got to move that beast.
The 4spd auto doesn't help. I think a V10 Ford or Hemi 2500 would be a much wiser choice, if you want to go with a gasser.
