Auto Transmission Question (545RFE)
 

I have a question about the 545RFE transmission. The gear selector lever sits on the driver’s side of the transmission. How many positions (detents) can you move it through? If you start with the lever tilted towards the front of the truck, what gears do you pass through as you pivot it backwards? Is it a standard PRND21 arrangement?

The reason I ask is that I have a lead on a drivetrain from a wrecked 2008 Ram. I was thinking about installing it in an old DeSoto. I’m looking for ideas that will allow me to operate the transmission using the original pushbuttons in the dash.

Yes and i dunno 'bout all that. Those tranny's are controlled by their own computer....

I'm planning to grab the computer if I pick up the drivetrain. At this point, I'm mainly focused on the positions of the lever. I've heard different accounts from folks I've talked with locally.

One person claimed that the shift pattern was RNP4321. The other person claimed it was PRN4321. They did agree that the "4" position was the primary drive (or overdrive) gear. Once you're in "4", the computer handles all the shifts.

Neither person was completely sure if the shift patterns goes from front-most position to backmost position, or vice versa.

Same configuration PRND21.
You might want consider running a 727 or 518 behind it and using a pcm out of a manual trans truck.

well seing that the auto position lever is directly attached to the tranny lever via cable, it would be PRND21.....dunno where the rest of the stuff came from??? and my guessing would be that the lever on the tranny is all the way back when its in park, as i have most of the cable showing on mine when its n park....

Never has a car been made as Reverse being the top gear. WTF?:icon_doh:

Yep PRND21. 4th and 5th are locked out via the push button on the end of the shifter.
