Default Y-pipe location change?

As we all know the factory y-pipe is poorly designed and a Magnaflow y-pipe is much better. I have a different idea about the location of the y-pipe, and if it makes any difference at all.

My idea is to remove the factory y-pipe and run two pipes side by side back to my Magnaflow muffler. The pipes would then be joined together with a Magnaflow y-pipe dumping right into the muffler inlet.

Might be a dumb idea.....who knows. It's just what happens when I have too much time to think about stuff. Yah or nah works for me.

are you talking a y pipe welded straight onto your muffler (on the inlet side of course)?
the idea of a *Y* pipe is to have it closer to the engine so you dont have to buy 2 sections of lets say 2 foot long tubing to go into the 'y' pipe.

if that makes any sense to you

Ya if you are going to run two pipes that far might as well be into a dual in muffler with no y-pipe.

I agree with Duroc. You have dual cats right? on my 03 the cat is part of the y-pipe (kinda)

yes, why not just get a Magnaflow muffler with dual in's and pipe from cats straight into the muffler? Any comments on this one?

Seems like a few guys have done the di/do muffler thing but if I remember the muffler blows out, or something like that.

I read the same thing a couple times, I went w/ dual in/single out and haven't had any problems but my truck is a v6. The factory y-pipe on 04's and up is pretty close to the muffler so your initial idea isn't crazy.

I just thought it would be something different that maybe no one has tried. I have a new SI/DO muffler at home and plan on having my exhaust completely re-done this coming summer.

On my 03, I have only 1 cat. They Y is just before that. I plan on doing similar to yours ... I will have the Y just before the cat and will re-do the pipes from manifold to Y so that I get more equal length than what it is now.

I just need to determine if there is an ideal location/distance for the pre-cat O2.
