Commit yourself to a trans swap, because no RFE will hold up long term with what the factory controllers allow for programming. Once you come to terms with that, you have some good options:
1. Manual trans - been done, factory parts exist to do it because 2500's
2. 46RH/518 or 46RE - been done - evolution of the revered 727; 518's are fairly strong stock and can be really built strong, but you lose the extra OD gear of the RFE
3. ZF 8HP70 - been done - 6 gears plus double overdrive, more work and more expense but no regrets by anyone who has done it; since the platform has changed little, actually bolting it in is pretty easy
Lots of other possibilities (like 4L80E has been done) but get alot more custom work required from there.

Concur with Magnoom, most people find going back a gen or to the latest offerings are a better option for durability than the 5 speed original when you increase engine power.

I have driven all of those transmissions mentioned, even have a car with a 727 in it now (and about four 727 cores sitting in the garage). I have been impressed with the shift quality and performance of the latest automatic transmissions, So I'd go with the 8 speed. Manuals work well too, but can get old fast if you have a stiff clutch. The A10 in my 6.2L Camaro works awesome, and I picked it over the manual option (1st time I ever picked an AT over manual).

Thanks for the response. 2007 1500 is a 4x4 forgot to mention that. Can the 46re be an automatic and does it bolt on easily , don't know much about transmissions ,learning, which would b easier, the 46re or the zf8hp70. We try to do most of the work ourselves, but will look for help when needed. I'll be researching these transmissions .

thanks for the responses. Harold

Not only can it be an automatic, it IS an automatic lol. Yes it bolts in quite easily, this swap has been done, though I'm not sure if it has been done with a later 3rd gen (significant differences between early and late 3rd gen). 46RE was stock behind the 5.9/360 gas engine through 2003.

Cope loves to convert everything to a reverse manual valve body, so while it is an automatic what you really have is a manual with an automatic clutch.

So if you don't want the manual valve body, you need to figure out how to tell the 4spd od lockup converter when to do its OD and lockup. I don't know what signals are available on a 2007 to provide lockup and overdrive, but if you had to do it from scratch there is an affordable kit of vacuum switches that make the overdrive and lockup operate automatically, at least for RH variants. I haven't done anything like this on anything newer than a 1970s vehicle, so there may be other ways to get it done with the 5 speed setup/wiring.

2007 is CAN, truck definitely won't like lack of electronic signals.

Probably could trigger on/off with rpm and tps, maybe manifold vacuum. I have zero experience with intercepting and acting on CAN bus data. Is there some sort of cheap card that is programmable that allows you to do stuff like that for the 2007 Dodge?

Well having time to think, leaning towards a 8hp70 trans swap, seems people have done this with wiring harness from the German . Still needing more info,

1. Do I need the transfer case from the 8hp for my 4wd, or will my older one work?

2.What other things might I be looking at new drive shaft and supports for trans and drive shaft?

2007 1500 4wd

thanks Harold

1. You'll need the 8HP75 (Ram 4x4 trans). Not sure if your existing t-case will bolt on to that, but considering that car companies will save a buck wherever they can, it most likely will.
2. Electronic shifter, in this case most likely the rotary dial unless you intend to convert your interior to a console shift.
