Can't fix this misfire!?? help please!
I don't know much but I have a 2002 dodge ram 1500 5.9 that I bought from a crappy side of the road dealer with no warranty I need to get my registration but the check engine light if on. AutoZone had me replace spark plugs wires and coils still nothing mechanic replaced cap n rotor still nothing now he wants to try the heads? I really can't afford 1000 dollars and i'm one of those girls who has no idea what to do with no family to ask please any input is appreciated

Well, could be the heads but not for sure. The 5.9 is a pretty stout engine BUT a lot is gonna depend on how well it was taken care of for the fist 10 years of it's life.
I'd start with something a lot more common and a lot easier (and cheaper) to check. Check the plenum gasket for a leak, which could cause running, mpg and misfire problems and is a VERY common problem. Remove the air intake, push the throttle body open and look down it with a flashlight. If you see any signs of oil then the plenum gasket has blown. If this is the case, a Hughes plenum fix kit is around $100 and will take about 3 hours to replace. Not to say it's not a head issue BUT if nobody has checked the plenum yet, then they are looking to take a LOT of your money before looking at a common issue that is something that is a fairly easy fix. |
