2003 Ram 5.7 has 251,000 miles. Smoking when it idles.
Hi Guys and Gals,
My 2003 Ram has 251,000 miles on it. Can't afford new one since I have a son in college. It is burning some oil now and smokes when it sits at idle. Sounds like a possible valve sticking or lifter issue. Any help here or suggestions would be appreciated. I am having it repainted this week and am considering replace the engine with new rebuild. Love this truck and not ready to let go of her. Thank, Hoppy |
I'd do a rebuild at that many miles anyways.

New engine
Would I be better off buying an engine already rebuilt?

Sure I guess. Perhaps the warranty would be better on a rebuilt motor vs a shop's warranty. I'd check to see whatever's better.

Moved to correct forum.

I have the same issue with my 2002 with 200,000+ miles. I am getting a crate engine from Autozone. After the core it would be around $2,000 but that doesn't include some of the new gaskets. My trucks body is is great shape so I don't want to get rid of it, and don't have the time to do a complete rebuild. So I am just dropping a new one in.

WOW!! Those 5.7's sure do hold up! I'm glad i have one!
