What's The "Up" Arrow For?

if you look closely at the shift selector just beside the 1 is an outline of an up pointing arrow.

What's it mean? I've searched the manual exhaustively and found no reference to it, and I haven't seen it mentioned here.

It's an upshift indicator. Probably an option for a manual shift vehicle.

If it is an arrow next to the fuel gauge then that usually is there to tell you which side of the truck the fuel filler is located....

Take a picture of it... I'm curious.

no it's on the VFD with PRND21, it's right beside 1 and is an arrow on the screen. can't take a pic cause it can't be seen on my shift indicator anymore. I added blue film to it and its really dark now.

An upshift indicator makes sense for a manual, they used the same display in many vehicles so it's probably just there on the display but lacking any programming to be of use.

Yes that is likely what it is... I'm gonna look at mine closely and see if I have it too...

If mine has one, I'm glad it doesn't work------that just plain annoying, it may also activate on an automatic when you're manually shifting it, if its at a specific rpm or vacuum point---who knows????????

GRNDPNDR Jan 24, 2013 05:32 PM

I've tried it on mine, by keeping it in first gear......it certainly didn't come on at any reasonable RPM, I was way above where you would shift up, without redlining it.

Definately there on mine but doesn't do anything. The manual just points to the area and talks about what gear range you're in but nothing specific about the arrow. As above, my guess would be upshift light for best fuel econ with a manual tranny. I've seen that on an old furd before. They use many of the same parts for all the trucks you it could only apply to very few of us really. Now if my 4wd light comes on, I'll have a good question :)

It's to let the driver know when to upshift with a manual transmission when the truck has reached a certain rpm. As if someone who is driving a manual didn't know when to shift anyways.
The programming features of the computer have it desabled for auto transmissions. So, it's there on all of them, just not activated.
You wont ever get it to work for an auto, even when you try to manually upshift.

Mines a manual and its not activated, I wonder if they use the same cluster on a sprinter?
