Why you should check your differentials

The other day I was out riding and when coming to a stop I had a shutter from the rear. I tried to duplicate it but couldnt.

Today when going to church, I had the same feeling and this time there was a tick, tick, tick after it. I thought, oh chit. So I had to cancel the trip to church and limp it home as I was only a hundred yards or so.

When I lifted the rear end I noticed the paint missing off the diff cover and knew that wasnt good. Something got caught in the gears and got spun around the housing. Great. I took loose the cover and as soon as I seen the color of the oil I thought, oh phucking great. Maybe I lost a bearing. You can see the silver metal in the oil in the pics. However, I found 5 out of 12 bolt heads were sheared off. They evidently came loose, backed out and got caught in the housing and were snapped off.

Anyway, had to center punch the bolts, drill and use extractors. From the look of the threads on the bolts I pulled out, the idiot mechanic that did my gears did not add any thread locking compound. Sure wish I knew where that SOB was at now so I could go see him.

Anyway, going to the stealership tomorrow to order 12 new bolts (P/N 06036054AA)

Enjoy the pics

OMG Weed.....that's awful.
Good jobn you know what your doing to repair that sucker.
You'll save a shed load of $'s DIY plus.....you will always know it's done well.
I HATE it when people pay bloody good money to have work done on their trucks and then get let down usually very badly, by shoddy workmanship!
Like you Weed....I always like to turn my own wrenches whenever possible, due to stuff like this.
Good luck bud.
Al.

That sucks. Sounds like you caught it before it did any serious damage? Hope so.

Yeah, I seen no real damage other than to the heads of the bolts. I already pulled the axles and cleaned the tubs and flushed the carrier housing with several cans of brake cleaner. Ordered new bolts from the dealer today. They should be here tomorrow.

Royal Purple 75-140 was $20 a qrt

I have started hearing a thud type noise when taking off just as I'm making a turn at some lights coming from somewhere in the rear direction of my truck coincidentally too. I am hoping it's not the same case. Never had a diff problem until I had a phucking dealer ship do my powertrain warranty inspection... Found the front drain plug less than finger tight. I will have to inspect the rear this weekend too then.

Dang! That's a scary sight. Looks like the genius also rounded off the heads a bit.

So what hit your diff cover? Was it bolt heads flinging around? You're really lucky that didn't get crunchy.
