4x4 light doesn't come on, cannot communicate with module
 

2005 manual 4x4 shift knob

Doesn't feel like it's in 'full' 4x4, light doesn't come on.
Can it be the transfer case module that has gone bad?

My mechanic says he can't communicate with the unit. Before I purchase a transfer module, any input would be helpful
