New member here, love the fourm. I have read the wheel and tire post and have a couple questions to make sure I get the right wheels and tires. I have an 02 Ram 1500 Quad, 4.7 short bed 4x4m, the truck is all stock and I am wanted to add 17x9 wheels and 285/70/17 Cooper STT. Now my questions is the offset and backspacing. I want the wheels and tires to stick out a couple inches, I like that look. Am I thinking right that a -12mm and a 4.5 backspacing will make this happen? I don't think I will have any rubbing issues will I?

Second part to this is I am only getting around 14.5 mpg all the time no matter how I drive and if its city or hwy, any mods that will help with this?

Tires sticking out. Two issues, depending on the state Johnny Po po may hassle you. It also will cause excessive pressure on front end parts. Cause them to wear faster. If you put bigger tires you'll wish you still got 14.

I have 265/70/17 now so a 285/70/17 wont be that much bigger, 265 is 31.6" and a 285 is 32.7". I don't need a taller tire if I could find the same height but wider tired I would be ok with that too.

Its not just a small tire change 285/70/17 in a 33 its also 11.5 wide. And heavier than the 265. 4.5 back space is about the max on a dodge, and not have then out 2 far. The more weight you keep centered on the hub the better. 285's fit just fine tucked in the well wheel, no rubbing.

I put 285's on my stock 17 inch steelies and it was no problem to fit. But it really messed with my transmissions ability to shift properly.

I've got 33's (forget the offset at the moment) on 17" alloy wheels. The rubber sticks out ever so nicely (maybe an inch at most). Love the look it gave the truck especially over the oem steelies.
