CV Stuck, won't budge
Hey all, I am working on my son's 2005 1500 4x4 4dr. I am installing a BDS Suspension 6" lift kit. I am following the directions to the letter. Did the driver's side, popped the CV out, did ball joints and got the steering knuckle off.
Now, on the passenger side doing the exact same thing, but the CV will not budge. It only moved about 1/8" and does not move. I have a nive tool that fits right over it and just pops it out. How much should I force it? Any suggestions would be great, Heating an option? I'll take any suggestions. Thanks. |
Try rotating the CV axle. Years ago, when I was replacing the CV axles on my car, the one side was an absolute bear to remove and I thought I was going to bring the car crashing down on me.
When I spoke with the tech at the auto place where I was exchanging my axles and made mention of this, he stated that there is a locking clip at the end of the axle that shifts to hold the axle in place. So, he said next time to rotate the axle little by little while applying leverage and it should pop out. He added that my experience was common and wouldn't do any harm. Unless someone with a 4x4 says otherwise, I would think the same principle can apply in this situation. |
Thanks. I have rotated, but in big turns. I will try having my son rotate slightly as I apply pressure. I have a couple ideas up my sleeve.

Are you trying to get it out of the hub flange or off the input shaft?

I was able to get the knuckle off without taking the half shaft off, but I still would like any guidance. I know there is a clip on the differential output shaft. According to the local shop, where I got my son's tires, they are a pain and they do not always take them off.
The tire shop said they make a special tool, but is expensive. Likke I said the driver's side popped right out. Thanks |

I've seen slide hammers specifically for CV axle shaft removal for small cars. You might see if a local parts store rents the tool; otherwise, it may be a good idea to purchase it. Pay once, cry once, but get the job done properly. |
I had the drivers side CV get stuck on my 04. I rented the slide hammer and CV adapter, but it still wouldn't budge. As seen on Youtube, I attached a chain (with some slack) to a floor jack, and whipped the slack out of the chain with the floor jack (think a big slide hammer). Still didn't work, until I used a 6' crowbar putting tension on the chain and prying against the framerail, then popping it with the chain floor jack combo. For me the inner short shaft came out too. I installed a new seal at the diff. Cleaned everything up and reassembled it all pretty easily. But that CV was an SOB, and had me worried.
