a good oil

I just bought a 2006 Ram 3500 5.9 diesel. I am going to the parts store tomarrow, to check out motor oil. Is there a certain brand or type I should get. What weight oil should I get. The truck has 73000 miles. Is there a oil or brand I should stay away from. I am new to this forum, so you will probelly here from me a lot .Thank you dodge forum

Shell retella 15/40 is good. I run Royal purple

Any API CJ-4 certified oil is fine. Can't go wrong with Rotella. My personal choice is Valvoline Blue 15-40...

First things first, read your owners manual. It will answer 99% of the questions you may have regarding routine maintenance. If you don't have one, you can download one for free from the Dodge website. The manual will recommend the correct viscosity, the actual brand is totally up to you and you will get many, many different responses to that question. I run mobile 1 full synthetic in my lower mileage cars, conventional oil in my higher mileage. Personal choice.

Also, be sure to search for answers to questions befoe you ask. The FAQ/DIY section here has a ton of information. For example, here is a FAQ thread specifically talking about motor oil.

I'm usually real quick to point someone to the FAQ section, but in this case it's a diesel and that poll is really assuming a gas engine. Better if the OP asked in the dedicated Diesel section...

As mentioned, Shell Rotella is good, it's what we put in the alot of our marine diesels (USCG mechanic) that don't require a MILSPEC oil.
