2003 ram 1500 5.7 hemi tick *stumped*
 

Hello everyone, I'm a new hemi owner and new to this forum but could really use some help.
I recently bought a 2003 ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi with a constant tick...thought it might be the broken exhaust manifold bolts but after r/r them it's still there, I have since changed the oil to 5/30 synthetic oil and added some mmo and have put close to 100 miles on it.
The tick is load and consistent about every second at idle, truck runs great,no check engine light...any suggestions or thoughts? Tia

No offense but you sound like the NFL Commissioner after he heard Steven Tyler sing the National Anthem. Everyone told him afterwards when they heard him complaining about it "You wanted Steven Tyler to sing the national anthem and you got Steven Tyler to sing the national anthem" lol.


Its a Hemi thing, its comes with ownership, I always tell people who ask about my Hemi ticking that that is the sound of High Performance.


If your engine starts to lose performance or develop a louder extreme tick then I would be concerned about possible valve spring issues. Also most Hemi engines usually have some lazy lifters, and will cause wear on the pushrod side of the rocker arms. The tick can sometimes be taken away by re-torqueing the rocker arm shafts. Otherwise new lifters if the tick affects performance and makes the exhaust burble.

Sure that sound is typical with the 5.7L.

Some have changed out the tappers and valve rods to quiet it down some. The cost is about $190+shipping from Rockauto.com Like Josh said above, if it's not tooooo loud, then don't worry.

Mine has the same issue. But once it's warmed up and the oil is flowing, the noise is nearly hard to detect.

As said, it's the Hemi Tick. Nothing to worry about unless you start seeing a dramatic loss of performance. Also, why did you switch to 5/30 vice 5/20?

My 03 hemi does it but im use to it.After a while you wont even notice it.
