My car whines loudly when driving. It also won't shift into gears. I had the rpm's up to 4 rpm this morning and it didn't change gears.

 

Take it to a transmission shop for a diagnosis.

I was occasionally having that problem too. It was the dog in the back seat on the way to the vet. I kept it in low gear so the engine would drown out the whining. Another fix for the whining is to turn up the radio.

On more serious ... Start by checking the fluid levels and color/condition of the transmission, transfer case, as well as the front and rear differentials. Also look for signs of fluid leak, puddles, wherever you've been parking.
