2008 Dodge Ram Hub/CV Axel Help
Hello- i was hoping for some imput and information. So when changing my front passenger side rotor yesterday, the thing was seized bad. I tried the bolt removal method which didn’t work and resulted in a bent bolt that I had to cut off with a saw. When I did that I hit the CV axel boot, so I had to replace the CV axel. Well, go back to getting the rotor off... finally started hammering harder than I probably shoot have and a magnetized ball bearing came out of somewhere. It was round vs cylinder shaped. Do you think it came from the cracked/cut CV axel(from inside the boot) where those ball bearings are? Could it have come from the HUB? I don’t see how it could have keeping in mind the rotor was still on at the time and the HUB is sealed and I don’t see anyway it could have “gotten out of there”? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance! |
Sounds like there are few more issues to tend to on the front of your truck than just the rotors. What is the size of the ball that fell out? A large 1" or more ball is a CV. Anything smaller is from the hub. What is the mileage of the truck, and when was the last rebuild/replace of the front end?
KROIL plus a good electric heat gun is what you need for working on worn rusty truck components. |
FaceDeAce- Thank you for the reply. I tore apart the old CV Axel and the balls in there are larger than the one that “flew out” of who knows where. With that being said, any idea how a ball bearing would fly out of a sealed HUB assembly? I just don’t get how that could happened when it’s all closed off? Thoughts? |
Truck is 2008. Front end hasn’t been rebuilt. |
Mileage 145,000 |
If this truck were in my garage at home; the front end would be coming apart to be inspected and refreshed. New CV's, new hubs, new rotors, new brakes, lower ball joint, upper control arm (with ball joint), front diff axle end seals, front diff oil change, new shocks. Steering tie rods would be looked at, but would be very unlikely to have to be touched.
The hubs are sealed units. When they fail or if they are run with the CV nut loose, they eventually will fall apart if not tended to. |
Understood... but any guess how a bearing could come out of a sealed hub? |

Thanks for the insight/info! |
PS: if you haven't looked at them yet nor changed them in the last 30k - while you have the truck apart and working on it, look at changing the spark plugs too. NGK 5306 work best in my 5.7 Hemi.
