Default 4wd not fully engaging

I drive a 2008 2500, 102000 miles, with the cummins, auto, with electronic transfer case. When I shift into 4wd high or low the front wheels will turn but it makes a skipping or slipping noise. Is it possible that the encoder motor is not fully engaging into 4wd? it almost feels like something is not in the right position allowing something to slip or skip. Any other ideas? Thanks

Are you using your 4wd on a dry surface? If so, that's a major no-no.

If you trying to turn on dry pavement then it will bind up and hop/chirp the tires, however if you are going straight it shouldn't do that. Are your tire sizes the same for the front and rear?

Nope, definitely not using it on dry pavement. Twice in the snow, and another time in the grass

May or may be something simple as this. Forgive me as I have no idea of experience level you are coming from .......
-- Minor slow speed TIRE slippage in snow, less so on grass, can be a really chunky and clunky experience. As the tires grab, then slip 10 - 30 degrees, then grab again. Same symptoms can be happening in the differentials if you have limited slip, grabs-slips-grabs. The whole geartrain will clunk and ratchet in this situation. This is especially noticeable at slow speed at or just above crawling such as taking off gently. Could this be what you are experiencing?
