Thank
A diesel will get much better MPG's than any gasser when your towing that kind of weight. It's effortless with a diesel. I wouldnt think you drop too much maybe 1 or 2mpg when towing that weight with a diesel. I think the deisels actually get better mpg's as they sit, but the fuel costs slightly more.

If you get a tuner, I know those can improve MPG's a good amount for diesel crowd unlike they do for gas engines.
You may want to ask this question over in the Cummins area for better participation.

What Dirtydog said. Another question, how often do you tow? I tow the same weight about 2000 miles a year. Roughly $700 in gas @ 10 mpg compared to $545 in diesel if I could get 15 mpg. $155 a year, not enough for me to switch to a 2500.

In my opinion. The diesel definately will tow it a lot esaier but the fuel will kill you. My nephew had an 07 3500 dually, diesel. There was a lot less pollution on the 07. He towed a lawn care trailer, lighter than what you're towing but got 17-19 M.P.G. This included around town, unbelievable right? A friend of his was so impressed he bought a new 3500 dually diesel. Basically same truck, in 2011 or 2012. Best he could get was 11 MPG!! Add to that the extra buck a gallon or more, he was VERY unhappy. Unless you haul a VERY heavy load a lot, stick with the gas. I had exactly the same experience with an 08 diesel, another brand, went to Ram 1500, 2012, lots better mileage, tows good. PLUS the diesel was over $8000 option, not worth it to me. Again, JMHO

You can get DPF deletes and tuners that will add significant gains. When inspection time rolls around, re-install the DPF and factory tune and your good to go.
My buddy does this to his Ford. he gained 7mpg with the delete and a tuner. I dont know what the gains are for the Dodge, but it has to be better than stock.

Also, Dually diesel for a landscape trailer...lmfao Dually's should be reserved for 5th wheel campers/etc, otherwise your wearing tires and mpg's for no reason(6 tires rubbing the ground)

Dog, i agree 100% about the dually. I would never own one . I only mentioned itnas a good comparison on mileage between the 07 and new.
I don't know what ford your buddy has but mine was an 08 with the 6.4 dual turbo. This engine was only available from 08 thru 11. It was a beast but mileage? non tow, on interstate running 74 or so, 14 at best. Towing 21 ft boat, 65 or so, 9-11 at best! And i had a tuner, three stage, which in stage 3 greatly increased the torque, power and speed. I also threw the factory tune back in whenever i had it serviced, they do check for that. Nephew said without the tuner it had lots more power than his Dodge. Say nothing about with the tuner. Increase in mileage??? None! Actually my Ram 1500 , 5.7 gets FAR better mileage non towing, several MPG'S, towing boat? Comparable, but at around a buck a gallon I love my RAM.

hey sorry I have been away for a while.
So Im up in canada so im doing the math to try and conver from L/100km to MPG.
I have a 6500lbs traler that i probably tow about 3000mlies a year through mountains and hills. As is i think i get about 9MPG on average while towing it with my 1500 hemi (25L/100km if some one wants to check my math)
While driving through the city i get betwen 16-14 MPG (15-17L/100km)
On highway Im looking at almost 18MPG.

Do my number seem out of line to you guys? from talking with buddies that have similar trucks it sounds like im suckin the gas back somewhere. I do have a cold air intake that kills me in the winter so im looking at a radiator cover or something to help with the cold air. Also have a TBS that im still on the fence if it actually improves things. Seems like a little in the city but SFA on the highway.

I did post in the cummings area too.

Out side of possibly going deisel
what about tuners?? Any out there that would help me out any?

I have heard about a deisle engine in the 1500s any real word on this? what engine would it be and how much for the upgrade?

Thanks guys

My trailer is about 6k#s and I get around 9 on the hwy but closer to 11 on the side roads where I go slower. Around town (nothing but hills) I get 14, and on the hwy about 17 so I'm right with you. Mine is bone stock. And this is what I tow, not exactly the best for wind resistance!!!
