Brand New Ram 1500 won't go into Drive
 

So I just picked up a brand new 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 with a Hemi and went for my first road trip. I drove it around for the long weekend and had no issues but when I went to return home I broke down going up the first mountain pass. The truck was in drive and started slipping as if it were in Neutral. The engine just revved. I pulled over, checked fluids and temperatures for everything and found nothing wrong. After restarting the check engine light came on. The truck will go into park and reverse, but in drive all it will do is rev the engine and roll as if it were in neutral. You can not manually shift it either.

Anyways, I had it towed and the dealer in this small town I'm stuck in can't even look at it till Friday. Obviously it will be covered under warranty but I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar and maybe has a clue as to what it could be. Seems pretty odd to have tranny issues on a truck before it's even had it's first oil change :/

Same thing happened to me. The selling dealer picked it up, left me a loaner and delivered a new truck to me in 24 hours.

The salesman called the following week and told me that the service dept still hadn't figgered out the problem with it.

I just spoke to the Sales Manager where I bought the truck from and he went to bat for me. Low and behold as soon as he called them and raised hell they had time to look at it. Pulled the pan off the tranny and it's full of metal. I've had the truck for about a week or two and never towed anything and didn't drive it hard. It doesn't make much sense, but they're going to be replacing the transmission and hopefully getting me a rental lined up for tomorrow.

Make sure they put a new torque convertor on...you know dealers try to get away with anything. I don't understand why they get paid for it. Unless the protocol is change tranny and when all the metall in the torque convertor gets into trans change both. LOL

The only positive thing I can say here is ths is the first I have heard of an issue like this one.

I have had a few occurrences when I start the truck and put it in reverse, it has a delayed reaction getting into gear. If I hit the gas its not happy

When I was half way through the first post I knew it was a grenaded tranny. I have had a number of trannies fail on me (non of them Mopar), and they all do some version of what you said...

My last two GM 4L60E transmissions had 3 failures between them... it started out as a little slippage and continued to where it was slipping so bad in all forward gears that it would not get above 5 MPH. One was attributed to bad bands (whatever that means), and the other was a bad casing.

With any mass production there will be defects, you just happened to get one.

Thanks for the replys. The new transmission is on order and hopefully will be in soon. I'm hoping it's just a fluke thing we can attribute to mass production like you say. I've always loved Dodge trucks so I don't want to let this change my opinion.

I've noticed alittle slippage for the 1st and only time last week. Here we go. Lol

Time to get rid of the stock fluid.
