Question Question about oil change

Hey all,

I have a quick question regarding oil changes and the oil change indicator in the computer. I last changed my oil only 2400 miles ago and already the computer is telling me its time to service my truck again. The recommended interval for my truck is 6000 miles I believe. Should I change the oil now or just reset the computer and change it at around the 6000 mile mark? Thanks for your time.

Chrysler supposedly says that the indicator light for that bases its timing off of mileage, temperatures (Both engine and ambient), and idle timing...

I've never had mine come on that quickly though. I follow a 5000-6000 mile change interval regardless of that dum dum light.

Something else to consider is that maybe the light came on and you reset it or something before changing the oil... That will mess with one as well.

My manual states 6000 mile oil change intervals. That is the rated interval to keep your warranty. Also published to account for fewer oil changes to conserve oil.Myself,I cant do 6000 mile oil changes, just wasn't brought up to do so.My truck sets more than it is driven,so I follow the 3-5 month schedule, regardless of mileage. My oil gets changed at about 1800-2200 miles.Do your oil changes like you feel is right, its your ride, just don't go over 6000 miles.........

Mine has been coming on at about every 2500 miles since I bought the truck in Feb 2009. I even have the latest PCM flash. I used conventional oil ( the dealers free oil changes ) until I ran out of coupons at 26,000 miles and have been running Mobil One since then and still have the same indicator at about 2500 miles.

I just change mine every 5000 miles, since it is easier to remember and just reset the light whenever it comes on. Only takes a few seconds to reset it.

I asked my service adviser about this because I noticed the same thing... he said it's based on a number of things (some mentioned above) but also trip duration, number of starts, all the things that tend to cause increased engine wear. In my opinion, an oil change is cheap insurance - I still change mine every 3k miles, I don't care what the service manual says.

Okay, thanks guys. I just wanted to make sure there was no real reason to change the oil this early. Thanks again.

I change mine at 3,000. Guess I like the old school way myself.

I go by....
Dino Oil change @ 3,000
Synthetic Oil change @ 5,000

I only drive highway miles, so my truck dosent really need it as often, but i do it at those intervals anyway.

Mine comes up about every 2500 miles. If you look in the owner's manual it will tell you how to reset it so you do not have to keep looking at it.

My light came on at 2,579 miles and there was 100 hours on the engine. It will be interesting to see the mileage and hours when it comes on again.
