The rumor has been tossed around for several months now, but I don't think it's a definate "go" with Dodge, or a major consideration.

You would most likely see the 6.1L SRT-8 engine going into the new generation Dakota then anything right now
Most likely not IMO...

I take that back. I just remembered the SRT-8 engine won't fit under the Dakota's hood. Maybe just a 5.9 then?

-There is a new 4.0, which is going into the Pacifica, new Nitro R/T and others... So the 4.0 is not really dead...
-The Viper is supposed to have a new 8.4L V10, so bye bye to the 8.3L...
-There is supposed to be a new Cummins coming soon. But no one is for sure on this thing...
-3.0 has just disappeared...

So existing engines are:

1.8 (I4)
2.0 (I4)
2.0 (I4 VW Deisel)
2.4 (I4)
2.7 (V6)
2.7 (I5)
2.8 (I4 Deisel)
3.3 (V6)
3.5 (V6)
3.7 (V6)
3.8 (V6)
4.0 (V6)
4.7 (V8)
5.7 (V8 HEMI)
5.9 (I6 Cummins Deisel)
6.1 (V8 HEMI)
8.3/8.4 (V10 Viper)

minus and plus a few that I forgot...

That diesel inline 6 needs to be put to good use. Dodge/Chrysler would have a Mercedes on their hands if they used it or offered it on the 300/Dakota.
