DaimlerChrysler is talking with Volkswagen and Chinese automaker Chery Automobile Co. about possibly collaborating on a new compact car that could be sold under the Dodge brand, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The company needs a partner for the project because of the high costs and relatively low profits associated with building a small car in the U.S., the WSJ said, quoting a company spokesman as saying: "It's very tough to make money off a vehicle this size."
Although a decision on the project isn't imminent, according to a "person familiar with the matter," whatever model emerges from the discussions is likely to be based on the Dodge Hornet concept car shown at the Geneva auto show in March.

RE: DaimlerChrysler May Outsource Dodge Minicar
What a surprise! My question is how much longer it is going to be before they outsource the truck line (besides the Ram 50), minivans, and suvs (oops too late on that Compass & Patriot). They cannot keep outsourcing like this. They have to make their own stuff if they want to succeed. If they intend to outsource, why are they outsourcing to a company that is noted for reliability problems and another one that is unproven. I want a DODGE not a Chery, not a Volkswagen, not a Mitsubishi. A Dodge! Is that too much to ask for crying out loud.
