’71 Road Runner
 

I saw a red Plymouth Road Runner that I believe is a 1971 parked at the mall and it had dual side-facing hood scoops with 400 on each scoop. I couldn't figure out what it meant, I thought it might be engine size but if I'm correct, Chrysler's engine line back then was 318, 340, 360, 383, 426, 440. Then I thought it might be something like the 1970 Charger 500 but I'm not sure. Does anybody know? </P>

’71 Road Runner
 

It is the engine size, but it is not a '71 it's a '72, unless they changed it. The body is basically the same, but the rear bumper and tail light assembly are completely different, the marker lights are different '71 is flush mounted and segmented where as the '72 is added to the outside of the fender/quarters(and because of this difference the quarter panels and fenders are not interchangeable), the emblem in the panel in front of the hood on the '71 has the Plymouth emblem in the depression and a decal surrounding it that says Plymouth twice and the '72 has the Roadrunners head in the depression, the grills are completely different '71 is slotted and has the Roadrunners head in the center and the '72 is honey comb has the Roadrunner name plate on the drivers side and has a divider in the center and a slight difference in the front bumper one has two bumper jack slots where the other does not.

'71 was the last year for the 383, 440+6(although there are a few known to have slipped out in '72 with the 440+6/3X2bbl/six-pack set up)and the 426 Hemi. The 400 was the replacement for the 383 in'72, the only difference is the bore size otherwise it's the same engine.

So, either the Roadrunner you saw was a '72 or it is a '71 that has the wrong hood or hood decal on it, unless they changed the engine to a 400 and changed the hood decal as well. <img border="0" src=smileys/smiley2.gif border="0"> <edited><editID>71ROADRUNNER</editID><editDate>37986.3475462963</editDate></edited>

Yea, I can see where you thought that, they do have those really nice smaller dual hood scoops. The fact that he stated that it was a Roadrunner, might have seen the nameplate and decals, and he said they were dual side-facing hood scoops is what definately gave it away for me. I don't know why they are called hood scoops when they don't scoop anything, but they look really cool.[sm=smiley16.gif][sm=smiley4.gif]

I think the idea of calling it a hood scoop is that it scoops in more air for the engine. That's my opinion on that anyway [sm=smiley16.gif]

Sorry, but the 383 and the 400 both have a 3.38 stroke. The bore is different, the 383 has a 4.25 and the 400 has a 4.34 bore.[sm=smiley23.gif][sm=smiley2.gif]
