1971 Charger Transmission Problem

Hello out there.
Just found this {Site} today.
Bare with me.
New owner of 1971 charger.
Had the Transmission {Total} rebulit.
Put [it] back in car.
Problem Car starts in all [ Gears} P,N, D,R,!,2].
Checked and rechecked linkage and then triple checked linkage.
I called the guy who rebulit it.
His reply was " He had to put a {new Switch} in, the old one was broken.
Explaining that the switch tells the car if it's in Neutral or park.
Futher saying that the previous owner must have tried to {{run a wire from the broken switch to the starter.}}
Any Ideas?
Any sites (on-line) that would give a detail diagram of transmission wiring?
Would appreciate any in put.

RE: 1971 Charger Transmission Problem

I believe it's called the "Neutral Safety Switch".

I'll see if I can find out more. Mine used to give me problems when starting the car. I had to put in in neutral to get it to turn over.
The day I brought it to someone it stopped acting up and lucky hasn't given me a problem since.

I'd see if I could find this extra wire and remove it and see if the car starts at all. Like mine, you might have to start it in neutral but atleast you won't be starting it accidentally in gear!

It definately sounds like your neutral safety switch has been bypassed. Look at the wiring where it connects to the switch, and follow it back looking for any signs of it being cut/spliced/altered in any way. It might also be altered at the connector on the steering column.

good evening as far as it starting in all gears the middle wire of the N/s switch has been grounded to the chassis somewhere usually right next to the starter relay you may see a wire coming off the relay and grounded it the general area good luck hope this helps

BTW if you cant find where the wire is grounded just run a new wire from the starter relay to the center pin of the Netual Safety switch that should take care of all your issues

Disconnect wires/plug from side of the transmission.
If it still starts in all gears they have by bassed the switch.

I will check at home for wireing Diagram but I have a 4 SPD so it may not be listed.
Also you can put a OHM meter on the post sticking out of the switch on transmission go between one pst them the other two with car in park and R should not have connection if in R
