first off, i have to say, i am loving my new 08 caliber. my wife drives it more than i do and she is thrilled with it.

i have been having one problem that i think is pretty major tho.
when we go and fill the gas tank, if i let it pump to filled, when i pull the nozzle out gas runs out everywhere. obviously this is a problem for several reasons.
is there anything i can do (besides not pumping to fill) or is this something i need to take it into a shop for?

 

Congrats on your '08 Caliber!
When you fill up do you stop filling when the pump shuts of automatically?
If not then that's when you should stop trying to get that extra bit into
the tank,if you tend to overfill or try to fill to top of tube it can adversly
effect your gas vapor recirculation system.
This overfilling can saturate the charcoal recirc canistor which is located
(looking from the back) to the left of your muffler and cause fault codes to
generated.

 

i do stop when it shuts off automatically. when i let it shutt of itself like that is when the problem occurrs. i never try to add the last 15 cents of gas. the problem doesnt happen when i stop pumping before then.

 

Well it appears that the only solution would be to
either tip the pump nozzle up to drain it completely
or withdrawing it slowly so that it drains on its own.
Does it happen at every pump?
Are you located in an area the uses elaborate vapor
recovery fuel nozzles?
I would check with the dealer to see if the filler venting
is the culprit.

 

we do live in an area where they have those funky vapor recovery nozzles. i just moved here from an area that didn't and i think they are really strange. it does happen at every pump as well.

i guess we'll just have to check with the dealer and see what they say about it.

 

Interesting that I see this topic now. Just last night when I was picking up my '08 Caliber SE Plus, the salesman who sold it to me not to overfill the gas as it may overflow. Apparently a known issue.

 

Same issue, dealership says gas tank needs replacement.

 

I don't see where this is "known" problem,ever since closed loop gas vapor recovery
system were mandated this is the way they work.
You should not fill the tank past the auto shutoff provided in the fill nozzle,if you insist
putting that extra 1/10 gallon in the filler neck you will have spillover and in the process
contaminate the vapor recovery system with fuel not vapors as it is a "closed loop"
it has to go somewhere,most likely down the side of your car.
Tanks may have to be replaced for bad gas level sending units or contamination
from manufacturing debris but generally not because YOU overfill the tank.
This backflow is noticeably increased in jurisdictions that use the vapor recovery
dispensing nozzles.

 

My daughters does the same thing. She estimates how many gallons she,s going to need and stops half way, removes the nozzle and lets it sit a few seconds, then continues pumping untill full. She says this eliminates the overflow problem. Sounds to me like an air pocket somewhere in the tank, so I told her to "burp" the tank like i just explained. It seems to work.

 

Dealer is replacing our gas tank today due to this issue. They said they called Dodge and this is what Dodge told them to do. So they ordered the part (tank) and are doing the work. Covered under our warranty.
