Oil light and sound

Problem. 2000 Caravan.

Wife phoned from work. Oil light comes on (with bing, bing bell sound) when she stops at a light. When she goes again, light and sound disappear.

Advice?[/align]

Has she tried checking the oil level?

Will check. Thanks.

We did, however, have a oil change 3 weeks ago and there has been no leaking on our driveway since that time.

Don't like the fact that she heard bing bing sounds.

I searched the internet and found this reply: Any thoughts?

I saw in a previous question that you answered for a person with a 1998 Dodge caravan that had their oil alarm light and warning bell come on at low idle and you thought it might be the idle control sensor.

I have a 1997 Dodge Caravan with 60,000 miles, 3.0 L engine that just started having the oil alarm go off when you first started driving it. We took it in and the oil pressure was okay, the shop put in heavier oil and stabilizer but the problem is still there. It seems like when you take your foot off the gas the light and alarm will come on and when you pull up to stop lights it will come on. When you are accelerating or cruising on the highway it goes off.

Could it be the idle sensor, where is it, can you change it at home?

Answer

The oil light and chime on my Caravan came on at idle at stop lights. Would go off if you shifted to neutral and would go off when when driving. It only came on when the idle was very low. Just increasing the RPM by a hundred revs would turn it off.

I replaced my oil sender $18 and now it's fine.

All of that is generated by a signal from the sender. The sender can be defective, or your pressure may actually be low. It can be low because of low oil level, or low pressure due to a worn engine. If your engine has lots of miles--like over 150k it may be running on the low side. If that is the case, you can still nurse a lot more out of it by running slightly higher oil viscosity. Where do you live (from a temperature standpoint) and how many miles are on it?

I have 120,000 miles on the engine. 5/30 oil. Well maintained. Oil level is low, but nothing drastic.

Drove it 2 hours after my wife-no problems. The first 30 minutes this morning, same problems, and then...back to normal again!

If it was low oil pressure, wouldn't I still get the signal?

How do I measure low oil pressure?
