08 to mid 2012 small brake upgrade part #'s
so my 2010 T&C came with the old, under sized brakes. I fill the fan all the time and tow a pontoon boat so I was eating up pads and warping rotors.
So I checked that the new break set up would bolt up and it 100% does. Even the larger dust shields bold right up. Van now stops nicely! Like it should. Here are the part #'s. The HD break vin code is BRG... http://i40.tinypic.com/n67ztl.jpg http://i41.tinypic.com/2w5j7rd.jpg http://i40.tinypic.com/6qlfs3.jpg http://i41.tinypic.com/2rqhst5.jpg |
Do the 16" wheels fit or do you need the 17" wheels to clear the calipers?
|
16" wheels do not clear :( I tried my winter rims and they didn't clear.

Keep in mind that these are the Manufactures Suggested Retail Prices, the prices that the dealers usually charges. If you buy online, the prices will be significantly less (around 30% off most parts on the site I checked) but you will have to pay for shipping. If you have 16" wheels you will also need to buy 17" wheels and tires. Code:
Qty Part Number Description Price Ext. Price |
thanks George

I think I have about 1400 with tax with cores returned. That's Canadian at my cost. I do have 17" rims.

I looked up the prices on an online Mopar parts site and made the following chart.

Thanks for sharing part#'s, but I think the $1600 price tag is kinda high. The conversion cost is at least double that for folks with 16" factory wheels.
It's a lot cheaper to correct the root cause which is a chronic dragging brake problem that plagues certain Grand Caravans with the 12" brake setup. The brakes on these vans are not small. The premature brake wearout and fade is caused by incorrect clearances on the $28 rear brake mounting brackets which cause the pads to remain partially applied after the brake pedal is released. On a smaller percentage of these vehicles the sliding caliper pins rust due to neglect. Most mechanics fail to grease them during brake jobs, as specified in the shop manual. This also leads to brakes stuck on. A 12" brake system is surely not too small for towing a 3600lb trailer setup. They are larger than what came on an 80's 1 ton pickup with 7000lb towing package. The smaller brakes burn up prematurely because they are applied all the time and never cool down. Of course that problem can be corrected by spending 20x more for a complete brake system swap. |
Then why would Chrysler totally redesign the Caravan/ Journey brake setup if it was only a 28$ part. The new setup is MUCH more substantial than the old. Why would that be? Dual piston front calipers?
Honestly I don't want to hear that the the cause of the problem is anything other than the obvious. I realize that your old truck had whatever break setup and used to haul houses but thats not what this thread is about. This thread is for the person that might not want to keep doing"band aid" repairs and fix the root issue. I now have had both setups and its night and day. |
