Caravan won't turn off, can't remove key
A couple days ago, I started having trouble getting the key cylinder to turn and let me remove the key. Yesterday, when I got home, it would not turn off for over 10 minutes. I tried putting it in drive or reverse and then back again. Not sure what worked, but eventually, it let me shut it off.
Today, I went to do some errands, and I could not get it to turn off for anything. I had to skip the errands since I could not turn off the vehicle. Once I got home, my dad spent about half an hour trying to turn it off before finally unhooking the battery. Now that it is off, but still in the on position, we can't turn it on either. Unless we find a simple solution,, it will need to be towed to the mechanic shop on Monday. I did some looking online, and what makes the most sense is that the van somehow thinks it is not in park when it is, so it won't allow the key cylinder to turn. Does that seem likely? If so, what kind of repair am I looking at? This is a 97 Dodge Grand Caravan. I can get a ride to work for awhile, but I really can't afford to get a different vehicle. And I really like my van. It has taken me out of town a lot as well as cross country a few times. |
Tap the key into the lock cylinder with a hammer then work it out.

It is not in the correct position to remove. I don't think the key is supposed to come out when it is in the on position. We also have to solve the overall problem. There is no point in driving anywhere if I cannot get out and leave the car.

That's what I meant by "work it out". Tap it and turn it till it's in the off position then remove it. Once it's out replace the tumbler.
Different vehicle, same manufacturer, same principle. |
