Fuel Pump or TIPM
 

Good evening,

Yesterday my 2008 Dodge Caravan began to stall when I was pressing the accelerator. No check engine light came on and I had plenty of fuel. I pulled over in a corporate parking lot and turned off the van. When I turned the van on the engine would crank but not start. I then towed the van to the dealer.

The dealer ran diagnostics and stated my fuel pump needs to be replaced. The cost of service is close to $800! I researched the issue and it seems this is a common problem with these vans. Some owners have changed the fuel pump only to find out the issue resurfaces and had to shell out more money to change the TIPM module.

Have any of you encountered the issue I am having? Is there a recall for the fuel pump or TIPM module? FYI I did have my local mechanic take a look and he said the engine does start when he sprayed something into the throttle body. He said the fuse in the TIPM is fine as well. My van only has 42,000 miles. My fear is I don't want to be stranded somewhere in the middle of the night should this happen again.

Yah been through this one. The relay can't seem to handle the current load. Best way to tell if it's pump or relay is to bypass the relay in the tipm with a jumper harness and see if the problem goes away. If it's the relay it you don't need to replace the whole tipm the relay can be replaced. Some of these tipms were subject to recall. A quick search on You Tube will show you how do both

The recall is specifically to 2011 Dodge Durango and Jeep Cherokees but it seems this applies to our Caravans too. I will ask the dealer if they can perform this test. Hopefully the fuel pump relay only needs to be changed.

Andrea, would dealerships be able to perform the test that will identify if the TIPM fuel pump relay is faulty?

Thanks Andrea. I did enter my VIN and no recalls in regard to the fuel pump were displayed. I did ask the dealer to perform a diagnostic and based on their results they recommend the fuel pump to be changed.

Wonder if they determined if the pump was getting power and ground? If power and ground is at the pump connector then yes the pump is bad.

Yes they did determine that the pump was getting power and ground. The dealer will replace the pump this weekend. Is this typical for this year and with that low of mileage?

The dealer changed the fuel pump and I was able to apply some coupons to get the price lower. Now my passenger side front door does not lock automatically using the key fob or the door lock button from the driver side door. I did some research online & watched a few YouTube videos and the fix was to remove the IOD fuse, wait 30 seconds, insert the IOD fuse and issue would be fixed. I opened the fuse box and there are several IOD fuses, and one specifically for IOD main. Can you direct me as to which one to remove for a 2008 Caravan SXT?
