Whirring sound when placed in park or drive?

03 Dodge Caravan Sport 130K auto

A few days ago I noticed a different sound I can best describe as a whirring sound when I move the van from neutral or park to drive or reverse - I assume this is when the torque converter comes into play? When placed back in park or neutral sound is gone. No other drive-ability issues occur - that I can sense - but I want to catch this before it progresses. Please advise.

Start by checking the fluid level and condition. There’s a sticky thread at the top of this board that walks thru how to use the engine oil dipstick as a dipstick for the transmission too.

Fluid should be relatively clear and not smell burned.
