Code 0601 --> Replace PCM?

I'm researching a code 0601 from my 2001 Grand Caravan. From researching previous posts, it looks like I need to replace the PCM. Has anyone successfully fixed this code? Was PCM replacement required? Anyone have any suggestions for getting a used PCM? Bad idea?

Thanks,

Rick

So, this means you have:

Code:

P0601 Internal Control Module Memory Check Sum Error
which indicates some portion of PCM memory got scrambled. Not sure if this could be cleared by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes (if the checksum is covering nonvolatile RAM), but you might try this first if you haven't already?

If this doesn't work, you might look into getting your PCM re-flashed at a dealership before putting in another one...

Yep, Yep, Yep...I've tried a reset. The check engine light (which started this issue) went out, but soon came back on within a few miles of driving.

I will ask the dealer about flashing the module to see if that takes care of it.

By the way...this van has 85K miles...Just beyond the warranty period for the pcm (emissions 80K or 8 years).

Thanks,

Rick

RE: Code 0601 --> Replace PCM?

We have seen codes to replace PCM several times in the shop.
I would say less than 25% of the time we actually had to replace the PCM.

It can be a pain in the ass to find something like a broken wire or corroded connection.
One time our tech found a wire broken inside the insulation - never seen that before, but it was just lucky he found it our we would have been throwing parts at it all day.

I had this problem with my 2001 grand caravan.
It went back to the dealers ship about 7 times, had 3 new PCM modules installed, had the ignition coils replaces 4 times and the wiring harness torn apart and checked. Finally they got the head techs at Dodge involved and it ended up being the ignition switch.
It has not been to be working now for about 5 months without issue.

Ive always had to replace PCMs for that code, if its under 80000 miles it will be covered under the federal emissions warranty which is 8 years, 80000 miles. Wiring is definitely a possibilty though.
