Dodge Charger The Dodge Charger. The car that made its competitors shiver in the 60's is reborn in 2006 into a sleek sedan that can still send the competition home wimpering, the Dodge Charger.

Default Looking at 08 Daytona, have power questions

HI!
I went to see one this weekend and the car looked fantastic, however; I was a little disapointed in the way it drove. (I had not driven a Charger before).

It went OK when you floored it, but just cruising around it seemed like it could have used more torque at lower RPMs or lower grears or something. (This was very low mile car so I assume there was nothing wrong.)

Are there any mods like a tuner chip that would add more torque down low?

Also when looking at the SRT8 the HP and torque increases seem to be in the upper RPMs so I assume an SRT would drive about the same as the RT in the lower band?

Thank you!

OK just found the Superchips thread and reading about the product.

What you have noticed is true for both model cars. The hp and torque curves for these cars increase dramatically over 3000 rpms.

To answer your questions, yes there are mods to increase your low end power. Tuners help a little but you will look at a heads/cam package if you are looking for true low end power.

Remember this is a 4000 plus pound sedan. Stock they are not tuned for racing. They are tuned and setup for highway fun basically. You want it to burn a set of tires from a stop, you have to make those upgrades.

You'll reap the benefits of the Diablo over the SC, if you plan on doing any internal modifications under the hood.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to have to drive it again before making up my mind. I don't think I'd want to mess with serious engine mods as I'm just looking for a nice daily driver.

Would you guys say the RT and SRT8 are pretty comparable from say off idle to 3,000 rpms just crusing around?

I also checked on my insurance and that plus the gas mileage difference would be about $1,500 more a year to drive an SRT8, I'm thinking with the limited hot rodding I do it's probably not worth it. On the other had there is something to be said for the grin factor!

There's little difference from a roll between the 2 cars. Now the SRT will pull slighty over the R/T, but its not a race rape. Plus, you will end up doing the cheap mods everyone does anyway. I mean exhaust, CAI, and tuning and this helps. And if you get custom tuned from a dyno shop even better.

I raced an '08 SRT with my '09 R/T from a 70 roll. Ones of those days we just happened to cross pathes on the highway and no traffic. I could tell he had at least an exhuast and tons of cosmetic upgrades. Mine had exhaust and CAI only. The SRT did not start pulling on me until I hit 155 mph. That's when I hit my limiter and he didn't. LOL.

The R/T sounds great with the right exhaust and runs just as good. If you're not going to race like you mentioned, don't waste the extra money.

Don't forget though, you have the '09 Eagle setup, which is putting down roughly 40 rwhp over the '08 and prior Hemi motors. You should run pretty close a stock SRT, considering they're around 30-35 rwhp over a stock '09.

That's true, however, I wasn't tuned at all. Just those 2 bolt on mods and I was putting down 333 rwhp with the stock tune. The dyno shop was showing SRT runs that had the same bolt ons with canned tunes and they were putting down into the high 370's low 380's. So if a pre '09 grabs a good tune, they can be in the mid 300's as well and from a roll the car will enter it's power band all ready and everything will come down to the driver and response.
