ac works when it wants
2006 dodge charger ac works when it wants. when it works it is nice and cold. sometimes wont kick in until you drive for a bit. can run it and works fine shut the car off . go inside for a bit come back out and it wont work at all
. been to dealer a few times cant find anything wrong works fine for them, no leaks found. I need ideas here, out of warrenty |
Are you letting the car warm up enough to engage the electric fan? Reason it works when you're moving is you're getting airflow across the condensor. When you're stopped the only airflow (heat transfer) you get is if the fan is running. The stock thermostat is 203°.

Yes, sometimes even with driving the ac still won't come on. I need ideas on how to remedy this issue.

generally for most a/c systems the fans should come on whenever the a/c is turned on; if they do not the system will build pressure so high the high pressure cut off will shut the system down.
do you have an auto hvac or manual? test the system when it is not working. feel the lines into and out of the evaporator. the inlet and should be hot and outlet cold. if they are, the problem is probably with the air delivery not the a/c. If the pipes are not hot and cold the problem is with the a/c . Rev the engine up and hold it...do you get a shot of cold air....if yes, the compressor is probably worn out. other possible issues could be a bad thermal expansion valve. Does the compressor short cycle....on and off rapidly...a low refrigerant problem....hopefully the dealer would have checked the level as the first step. |
