Aussie Dodge AT4 info and specs

Hi all,

I posted this as a reply but thought it should also be posted as a new thread as it could start a good data base on identifcation and paint codes for the aussie dodges.

AT4, as most here would already know, stands for Australian Truck Series 4, much the same way as an AP2, AP5 etc stands for "Australian Production" chryslers e.g aussie chrysler royal (AP2) and aussie chrysler valiants (AP5 AP6).

Model numbers are as follows. Example - Dodge AT4 329 , the 329 - first digit tonnage, second and third are wheelbase + 100"......i.e 3 tonner with 129" wheelbase. Another example, Dodge AT4 575 is a 5 tonner with 175" wheelbase, AT4 114 is a 1 tonner with 114" wheelbase and so on. Commers used a similar system.

For models from 460 up, AT4-460 for example would indicate a V8 engine and AT4-460-6 would indicate it was a 6 cylinder version.
From this we can deduce that an AT4 690 is a 6 tonner with a 190" wheelbase (and V8 engine). Also, an AT4 760D would indicate a 7 tonner, 160" wheelbase and Diesel engine (D for diesel).

The 225 slant six engine was available from 1962 and was replaced by the Hemi 245 in 1970 and used in AT4 114, 129, 229, 329, 353, 460-6, 475-6, 560-6, 575-6.

The 313 V8 Poly engine was used from 1962 to 1964 and replaced in 1965 by the 318 V8. V8 engines were used in AT4-460, 475, 560, 575, 660, 675, 690.

The Perkins 6.354 (6 cyl 354 cid Diesel) was available as an option on AT4 660, 675, 690.

The 361 V8 and Cummins 160 (6 cyl 464 cid 160HP diesel) were only available in AT4 760 and 775

This info came from an AT4 parts catalogue with model identification that was kindly sent to me. Production of the AT4 ran from 1962 to about 1972 when replaced by the single headlight D5N... D5N i think simply stands for Dodge series 5, N-normal control (bonnetted truck). The D2F was the dodge version of the Commer after chrysler took over Rootes Group (series 2, F- Forward control)...and these were available with 361 V8 and Cummins 185 (470 cid V8 diesel)...but we digress! hehe. The D might have also coincided with the D series internationals as dodge and inter shared the same cabs and were built at the chrysler factory at South Australia from 1962 onwards as has been mentioned in other posts.

I'm actually in the process of producing models of the AT4 series in kit form in 1/43rd scale. They will be of the AT4 560-6 as a 6 cyl (225 cid) table top and AT4 775 (361 V8) single drive prime mover (a common configuration for these). Prime movers had shortened wheelbases, the AB series and C series internationals used 153" for their prime movers so we'd assume the same for the AT4 and D5N prime mover. An AT4-675 prime mover would not have a 175" wheelbase!

The other point of this post is in researching paint codes for the AT4 so that the models can be painted in authentic original or fleet colours, so if anyone has any info please post them, especially the aussie paint number for red, which i assume is called "Dodge truck Red"? I don't think the Dodge trucks shared the same codes and colours as the valiants, and internationals apparently had different codes and colours.

The Dodge AT4 paint codes i have so far are :

8623 - white

7239 - green/aqua

13211 - a fleet colour, i think it was telecom orange?

5259 - Dodge Truck Green

7238 - ?

If anyone can add to this i think it would be a good source of info to restorers and model builders alike!

When the models are available i will post pics or a link here.

AT4 info

Hi there Mousey

I have been trying to find out more info on the AT4 model as I know absolutely nothing about them. Your forum seems to have a number of enthusiasts with these vehicles who may be able to help.
I actually restore old Volkswagen Kombis but have seen this vehicle for sale and I took somewhat of a fancy to it. From what I know it is a 1971 AT4 575 with an upright hemi engine. It has a dual fuel system and a styleside ute body with a canvas frame. It has surface rust in the tray but the chassis and cab are really solid. The bonnet is damaged where it flew up one day, but it has all its chrome, original wheels and hubcaps. It runs, stops and steers. The tyres are worn but it has original wheels with split rims on the front. It has only done 83,000 miles. They seem to be somewhat of a rarity with the styleside, and the seller wants $1500 for it. it would not take much to get it re-registered. I guess my question is, are they appreciating in value and are parts readily available. Is there anything that I should be looking for that could be of a more serious nature down the track.
Your advice would be much appreciated.

Regards

Andy

Hi Andy,

The 575 is a 5 tonner with 175" factory wheelbase and yours has the "heavy duty hemi 245". The price seems pretty good for the condition it is in. I don't think they are going up in value at the moment but they are very good trucks never the less.
Engine parts should be easy as they are the same engine as the valiant, but i'm not sure what differences make them 'heavy duty'.
Whole parts and trucks seem to come up from time to time on ebay so the parts shouldn't be too hard to get. Some parts also interchange with the AB and C series Internationals (eg steering box and cab panels) as the cabs were both built by Chrysler. I think anything that can or might go wrong down the track won't be a major drama as they were a very common truck.

hi

there is not alot of these trucks left in NZ (a lot of them fell prey to rust and got left to rot :icon_no:)

anyway i own an 1975 ex-ambulance D5N-229 which is in perfect condition mechanically but sadly the cab has been allowed to rust beyond repair, and im now planning to get a new cab (it appears the cab is fairly easy to swap)

only problem is if I a good cab the rest of the truck is almost always going to be in OK condition and i dont have the heart to pull one apart :icon_wink:

there is also a 1967 at4-129 which has had the original 225 swapped out for a 245 (unsure why) the paint is fairly beaten up but it has a PTO winch in the back and is in sound condition mechanically

for ruby6689, $1500 sounds to be a good price for one in that condition (the prices may be less over in Australia) over here one in perfect condition is between $5 - 10 thousand

anyway if anyone finds more info about them, I am always interested

also i am looking for a copy/scan of the service manual (we had one few years ago but it got lost in the move) :icon_doh:

1971 Dodge AT4 575

1 Attachment(s)
I own and operate a 1971 Dodge AT4 575 at Hillside Park. After all these years it is still strong and sound powered by a 318 cub inch V8 with a five speed gearbox. I am currently refurbishing the old girl that my wife calls 'Matilda' and am expecting another 39 years of faithful service.

These trucks are bullet proof and reliable. Hopefully the photos are attached.

Re AT4/D5N trucks

From what I can gather the "heavy duty 245" had a larger crank and bearings than the Valiant and they tended to have more 'grunt' down low, this was also helped by the lower gears in the box as well as the diff ratio, these things were designed to haul a one ton load and did that with no trouble, mine has dual rears and was a tow truck, now with the 318 I can 'light' the rear tyres up no problem in second gear, first gear is useless, I can walk faster!

If anyone is interested in a 1978 D5N suitable for a rebuild or for parts, I know of one for $600 complete, in South Australia. The 245 and gearbox are not in the truck but they are included, the stepside rear has a solid canopy w/- windows and was mainly used for camping so not a lot of hard work. It was last registered in '93 and has been stored under cover since then, so is in quite good condition from what I can see through the dust and spider webs. :icon_wink:
If interested send me an email or call on (08) 8464 0520 evenings.

I would be very interested, if I was in Australia. probably cost too much to import it to NZ though

Dodge Paint Code

From the firewall plate on my Dodge AT4 1/575-N8 2018, the paint code is shown as Berg-AL 7227. As near as I can work out having cut back through 5 layers of paint, this code equates to beige. The original trim is tan. I'm actually taking the old girl down to my wife's uncle who worked at Chrysler Australia Tonsley park while these AT4's were being built. I'll post any interesting facts I get from him. Regards to all Dodge AT4 owners.

Dodge AT4

Mousy,

7238 paint code BERG-AL - RED

My chassie number is AT4-1-353N6-1847. This truck was registered in Victoria with a GVM of 4.450 Tonne can it be registered in NSW under the same GVM?

Any other information about this truck would be good.

Thanks,

Taddy
