Daytona just cut off, won't restart/

Started out to pick up my son from work, hadn't had any problem starting or staying running. car cut off when driving, won't restart. I did notice that there was a whinning noise coming from the back of hatchbak. I have heard that when a fuel pump is going bad, it can get noisy. is this true. heard it when turned key on, now I don't here it at all. How do I check to see it it is the fuel pump. damn thing left me at 11 pm. at night. help

A quick check would be to unscrew the cap on the Schrader(sp?) valve that is on the fuel rail and push the valve stem down to see if you have any fuel pressure at the rail. Be VERY careful because if there is fuel pressure it will shoot out with some force. If there is no pressure, try starting the car again and re-check. Another thing to check is the "hall effect sensor" or pick-up-plate under the distributor cap. They are notorious for going bad, and when they do there is not spark at all.

Hope this helps

My Shelby Z did the same when it's fuel pump went out. I was going out to Media Play one night and got to a red light and it simply died, but it started right back up and ran fine the rest of the night to Media Play and back home. The next day going into work it died while I was driving down the road, it never started again. I towed it back to my dad's shop and had a friend put in the new fuel pump while I was at work and picked it up after work and it has been fine since.

o.k.
It has been crazy here in South Carolina with the Hurricane scares. just got a chance to check out the fuel pump. it is not running, but, I am not getting 12 volts to the pump. I read between the too connectors on the harness, nothing. can anyone else think where I should go next. with the key on, I should get 12v at the pump. correct. Help.
This is a non-turbo 2.5 daytona.

still not fixed. ? about hall effect. if it does not pickup signal, The asd shutdowns right. I have a code 11 and nopower to coil and fuel pump. looking for ASD but not sure which one it is. If the Hall effect went bad while driving, would I get the original problem i listed in the beginning.

If the car isnt spinning over, then it is probably electrical, but if it spins but will not start, you can have someone bang on the bottom of the gas tank with a wrench and also spinning the car over a the same time, sometimes this will joggle the fuel pump and get gas pumping, then it should run, if this does not help, I would check the fuel filter, take it off and blow through the end where the fuel comes from, if this is not possible, it is the fuel filter and possibly the fuel pump.

I had a K-car once that cut out on me, what I found out from the dealer was that if the computer senses anything that could cause a major problem it would cut the power to the fuel pump. This is to stop a major engine failure from occuring. In my case the dealer couldn't find anything and it didn't store any codes so they reset the computer. You may consider disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and then connect it back up and see if you get your voltage back to the pump.

Well, a update on my prob.
Seems after chasing elec. problem, turns out I went to obvious and guess what. Timing belt is shredded.

I just knew being a new motor it wasn't that, but, it was. computer shut everything down.
Got to make a call to engine supplier, thatnk god it is a warranty on it . and, theyhave to fix it.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

On an 88 Daytonaoff the ASD relay the line that power the Fuel pump is Green/Black(also largest wire in bundle). You can jump this to battery to Very if you fuel pump is working.

Good Luck
Fred
