Hit a HUGE bump and now speedo doesn't work........

1987 Shelby Daytona tt2. I hit a HUGE pothole about a half mile from my work and heard something bang a couple times off the bottom of the car. I assumed it was just a piece of the road, but when I left to go home I noticed the speedometer isn't working. Any idea what could have happened? I didnt notice if it stopped working immediately after I hit it, just when I went to go home. The odometer and trip odometer havent worked since I bought it, now this!

Is the speedometer cable driven, or electronic. I am wondering if the speed sensor could have been jarred enough to fall off the car, if it even has one and that was the noise I heard hit the bottom of the car? I guess thats the first question. Thanks for any help or insight you can give me.

The speedos are notorious for dying in these cars, as are the odos and trips. You may just need a new pod. The odo and trip probably broke some teeth, which was mentioned in another post in the forum. You can replace them, but they are a bugger to do as they get really fragile. If you can get your hands on a new pod, do it. Tachs are defective in every Dodge I have ever owned. Check your speedo cable. Here is what you do according to the Chilton manual:

1. Reach under the instrument panel and depress the spring clip retaining the cable to the speedo head. Pull the cable back and away from the head.
2. If the core is broken, raise and support the vehicle and remove the cable retaining screw from the cable bracket. Carefully slide the cable out of the transaxle.
TO INSTALL:
3. Coat the new core sparingly with speedo cable lubricant and insert it in the cable. Install the cable at the transaxle, lower the car and install the cable at the speedo head. Do not bend cable or cable housing, a bend will cause incorrect indication or abnormal noise in the speedo assembly.

Hope this helps.
