Default 4.7 1500 vs 6.7 2500

Ok, I'm still a little ways off from buying the dodge I want (ram truck is definitely preferred) I just want to make sure it's the right decision (Well, it's American, so it's the right decision... the fact that it's a dodge makes it better lol)

Anyway... I had my mind set on the 4.7l v8 in the ram 1500 mainly because of the flex fuel capability, but off and on I hear good things about diesel engines, and a while back i was looking at an older 2500 diesel, so now I'm torn... That and I have a friend who had a diesel ram (until it got totaled when he got t-boned) he is one of the people who said to go diesel

I know there's a huge difference in weight, engine size, and towing capacity, etc

One of the main reasons I'm floating now between the 2500 and the 1500 is the lack of mileage figures on the diesel rig...

I probably won't need the uber hauling right away of the diesel engine, but on the same token, I've heard of power loss on the e-85... haven't heard the same about bio-diesel...

Now, I don't know if it matters, but I would like to do some mods such as true dual exhaust, stacks, possibly some lift, intake, etc... but that'd be alot further down the road... i just need a car right now...

Now the question is, pay more for the diesel, or just get the 1500 (either would be the crew cab for family reasons... i do know the new 2500+ models don't come with the new design till later thei year... which would work for my situation...)

(sorry for choppy typing)
(I know a while back i was looking at the charger... but idk, I keep drifting back to the ram... either way they're good cars)

sounds like you need to do some more thinking on your own. Do some more reading and i'm sure you'll get your mind set in the right direction. We can all share opinions, and seeing how you posted in the 1500 forum, your likely gonna get a lot of thought aiming towards the 1500... In my opinion, do more research, and lots of reading on challenger, ram1500, and diesel forums. Asking such a wide open questions makes it hard for us to help you, since you seem extremely undecided at the moment...

Get the 4.7, take it from someone who has owned a 6.7 and now has the 5.7 hemi. If they still used the 5.9 cummins then that would be different but the 6.7 is loaded with problems since it has the 2010 diesel emmisions crap.
I am a die hard diesel fanatic but I still traded the 2500 6.7 for the truck I have now. If you want to know the specifics do some more research on a cummins forum.

Get the gas burner. I traded in an '06 diesel for the Hemi. The diesel is a better motor but is not pracital if you're just using it as daily transportation. Don't give in to all the hype about the fuel mileage being better on the diesel. Truth is, it's only better when towing. The fuel is more expensive, the maintenance is more expensive. It'll be a different story if they ever release the half ton diesels. Just my opinion.

I believe the epa for the 4.7 and the 5.7 hemi mds is the same, except the hemi is a 1300 dollar add on. but why not spend the extra and be able to have the power when you need it???

I have the 4.7, kinda also liked the possibility of being able to run flexfuel but from what I understand its not much cheaper (10-15%) but you lose about 25% of your HP and MPG. Personally I dont feel its worth it to switch to flexfuel although the 4.7 does seem to be good strong engine on gasoline anyway. Possibly in the future the E85 Flexfuel might get cheaper making it worth the switch but as far as right now it aint worth switching to.

i'd go with the 5.7 simple cause like it was said earlier you get about the same MPG as the 4.7 with the 5.7 having the MDS. Also if you get the diesel you might want to get it while Dodge still has the Cummins, cause i know earlier talks before the Fiat merge that Dodge was ending its contract with Cummins. So there's no telling what the MPG's or HP/Torque for future diesels in Ram trucks might be.

A local dealer down here in San Antonio had 15 new 2010 2500/3500 last week, two of them were the black power wagons with built-in winch. Awesome looking trucks!!! They didn't have window stickers in them yet, so I don't know how much they were asking...

I say get the 4.7. I have the 4.7 and love it. This new Dodge is miles ahead of the old one. The new 4.7 gets a little better mileage then the 5.7, but it is like 1 mile per gallon. The real advantage is that the 4.7 is a lot quieter in the cab. There isn't that much of a performance difference. My friends with their 5.7 can not out run me. It is very close. This truck is also very comfortable. I do a lot of highway driving, in some very nasty conditions, and this truck handles it all.

Good luck to ya.

You're thinking about the Charger, or 4.7l truck or 6.7l Diesel. I think first priority is to determine what your use of the vehicle is going to be. You state that you just want to make sure it's the right decission. Well the only way to make the right decission is to determine your main use first. If you are just wanting to have a nice family car, go for the charger. My wife and I love the charger and the only reason we don't have one right now is she is upside down on her honda. Personally, it's my opinion that if you are a 2 car household, one of those cars should be a truck. Unless all you care about is milage todays trucks are comfortable, and get fairly good milage. If you go for the truck but don't tow a lot and a lot of heavy towing, then stick with the gas engine. I think the 4.7 is a really good engine from 09 on. If you are going to be towing on a regular basis but still nothing extremely heavy, maybe move up to the 5.7. I think dodge has the best diesel truck out there hands down, but for just everyday driving, or towing a boat or small trailer, you are talking about a lot of money. Even if you buy a used one maint on the diesels can be very expensive and you do not want to skimp on maint with a diesel, but anything broken will cost more. Look, just make sure you think it all they way through before you buy. Don't let your emotions take over or your friends talk you into what they want, they won't be paying for it. List the reasons why you like each one and want it, then list any and all down sides for each one. Big thing is don't get emotional about it, you will screw yourself everytime. I know, I just let that happen to me not to long ago and it cost me. Jeff.
