Default How to Mask Tailgate Emblem for Painting

I want to paint the chrome portion of the tailgate badge but leave the black inside the letters across the top and the black background. What kind of masking methods are out there? Is there a liquid or paste substance you can use to fill the recessed areas and then pluck them out after painting?

I was thinking plumbers putty might work. I was going to do this to but then decided I don't want to color match the emblems. I just want them black. One of these days I am going to black out the rear badge.

I think I saw on here some where that once you take the badge off, they snap apart so you can paint the parts individually and then put it back together and back on the truck.
