Default Paint Protect On My New Truck

i currently just ordered my first full sized truck and my first dodge truck. i am very excited and cant wait for it to get here. it is a black truck. and while i was at the dealer signing the bill of sale it was mentioned to me about paint protect/rustproofing and all that jazz. do you guys recommend i do this? my dealer said it was a good idea to do it since i am getting a black truck. do any of you have a black truck currently that is an '09 that you didnt get pain protected? for some reason i am concerned that my paint may fall off the truck if i dont get it haha which i know is completely not true. the only thing holding me back is the cost of it. i cant remember an exact number but i wanna say 800-899$. i also know you can get an after-market one as well but that wont be lifetime coverage like the dealer one is. and i will also have to go back yearly for the aftermarket. if anyone could give me some advice and let me know if you have done it to yours or if you havent and may have a horror story or if you didnt and its completely fine. thanks guys!

Getting a paint protection... I assume is what they are calling an extra shot of clear, or god forbid cladding your entire truck in a clear 3M film. It's all fine and well for the first year or so with the film, but it will get chips in it, yellow, fade, and all kinds of other gook that you can keep out of paint. The undercoating I am a firm believer in, but not "paint protect".

You want to protect your paint, then I suggest keeping that truck near spotless and keeping a good thick layer of wax on it at all times. Most new synthetic waxes have a UV protectant in it which will cut down on the sun damage that black is so prone too. The wax will also help with bug scratches and swrils if you keep it waxed all the time.

I'm not talking about a spray detail wax such as Turtle Wax Ice. Not knocking the product. I use it all the time for a detail spray, but I am talking about a good paste wax such as Meguiar's gold class or their syntec.

If you REALLY want to protect the truck, then I would say take it down to a body shop that is known for their awesome paint jobs. Have the truck sand blasted and have the factory color shot back on it. My reasoning? Simple: Factory paint jobs have become so thin that there is really not enough there to work with later down the road. This is in terms of doing a wet sand and other polishes to keep an awesome shine down. In fact, most paint jobs from the factory nowadays can't even be machine polished because of the thickness of the paint.

Just some food for thought.

The rustproofing on my Dodge truck is the same stuff used for the spray-on bedliner. I figure it might actually work. I had my Camaro rustproofed by the local Ming dealer. All of that stuff fell off from underneath within a couple of years. The trunk is STILL sticky inside though (after 30 years!)

I would have just gotten it thrown in the deal, that is the stuff they can give you for free.

I got that all with warranty for nothing, just told them if they want to sell me the truck they need to tint the front two windows to match the rears, and put the lifetime paint protection and interior scotchguard which is only the seats on my truck. They don't even use a whole bottle on one truck and its a small bottle. It is just sealant I think wax still should be applied but I don't care cuz mine is done for free. I decided to try the dripless oil spray this time instead of the black stuff that would stay on if they took the time to wash and degrease the underside before they applied it.
I just took it in for a touch up I actually paid 69 bucks for and interior shampoo, windows, exterior was and Blue Coral hand wax, no need to use tools enough clear taken off the first sealant job I am sure. Anyway they did a great job, was like a new truck. Was not a requirement, they only need to inspect it at 3 years or something maybe 5 cuz I didn't get the rust proof.
