The engine light came on a few weeks ago. After a few days it went out (before I had a chance to see my mechanic). It then came BACK on a few days later, only to go OUT again a few days later.... (you get the idea)

From what I can feel, the truck runs fine. Having said that, I noticed that when the check engine light is on the "ECO" does not come on regardless of how gently and economically I drive. Although I understand that the "ECO" icon isn't a definite sign the VVT is working, it usually is a good indication, I believe.

Anyhow, my mechanic had the Ram today and said it was a "Variable Cam Timing Solenoid", and he has one on order for me for Monday.

Has anyone had this issue and could there be more to it? Any thoughts or input would be appreciated.

 

What year, what engine? 4th gens with hemis I assume? If so I've never heard of the ECO mode affecting the VVT but I've read that ECO doesn't necessarily mean the engine is in 4 cylinder mode.

 

Yeah, I kind of thought the same about the ECO not necessarily meaning the engine is in 4 cyl mode... and yes, its a 4th Gen with the Hemi

 

The VVT function is based on a hydraulic phaser used instead of a solid cam sprocket. This phaser is controlled by the solenoid. The timing used to run the truck in 4 cylinder mode is different than the timing used to run the 8 cylinder mode. If the timing cannot be controlled properly, then the logic will not allow the 4 cyl mode which is tied in to the ECO display. Also, when in ECO mode, cam phasing is used to detune the engine to make only enough power to maintain speed - thus more ECOnomical. I may be wrong but I believe that's how it works. Others please chime in.
