Default Anybody made their own front hitch for Express or Sport?

Well I have looked at how the tow hooks attach to the frame behind the bumper. I think I can make a 2" receiver that bolts up to where the tow hooks mount and come out through the center of the black plastic fascia. I was thinking about a curt front hitch, but it sits way low. I can cut holes for tow hooks, or just add a hitch out the front and cut a square hole for that. Then I can have multi use out of it for a winch, lights, cooler rack etc...

Liability aside, which for a front hitch would be minimal, is there a compelling reason not to make brackets and a solid hitch that comes out at a much more reasonable height than an off the shelf hitch?

Looking at things, it sure looks very do-able. I have the tools and welder to fab up a hitch. The design would be minimal as it would be almost a straight shot forward.

Just a thought. Wondering is anybody has done this already.

i am thinking of doing the exact same thing. i have the curt hitch, so i was thinking of taking it off and fabing up something to mount to the same points on the frame and come out in the middle of the facsia area, even if it requires trimming the bumper.

if your in jersey and want to team up on the project let me know, time has been my problem with two kids and buying a house.

I'll just throw in my 2 cents here cuz I recently installed the Reese front hitch on my 09. First, I went with Reese because they appeared to be the only one out there that had one I could still use my front tow hooks. Second, I didn't make my own simply because it looked so frickin' easy - 4 bolts - 30 minutes done. NOT!! The holes weren't big enough for the bolts, the shim plate for the bolt inside the frame had to be trimmed way down - MAJOR HASSLE!! The first side took me 4 hours to get done because I already had the bolt and plate in the frame before I figured out the GD holes were too small. The other side took 5 minutes because I reemed the F out of it and they came right through. I also have a 4" lift, so I wasn't worried about the receiver being too low.

Anyway, keep that in mind if you do a Reese hitch, so you don't spend 4 pissed off hours under your truck trying to grind out a hole to fit a bolt through! Making your own sound like a damn fun project, especially since you have all the tools.

Best of luck and please post pics when you're done. I'd love to see that finished product!

my curt was simple to install, put on front two bolts, drilled back two holes, pull bolt thorugh with wire, tighten nuts, done.

i think it took less then an hour in the driveway taking my time.

I do have a welder, and I am VERY good at creating and figuring stuff out. It it still quite hot out here in the desert. When I do start to fab something I promise to take lots of photos and make sketches. I still think it is very do-able. It seems only a matter of a bit of creativity and cutting of that cheap front plastic piece. They way the current brands mount are my springboard -really only the bends and location change.
